    Better version than the Animals:

    I disagree.

    I have...

    Lead Belly
    Ramblin' Jack Elliott
    Bob Dylan
    The Animals
    Clarence Ashley...the original
    Georgia Turner

...doing their versions of the tune.

    This is the best however.

I play the harmonica (rack) and can manage some decent slide work on a guitar. Not that I can play a guitar but if you have some rhythm and understand how the slide trip works you can fool people.

I know Willie Nelson wrote it.

How does anyone laugh at "Crazy" with Patsy Cline doing the vocals...????????

    9.Long Black Veil...Lefty Fizzell
I think of Lefty Frizzell as being a very influential musician. Many of the greats of today and recent times including Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam have hallmarks of Lefty's singing style. But it's clear that the music and style of the great Jimmie Rodgers made powerful impression on Frizzell and the way he sang. So in the end, who gets the credit? Lefty or the Blue Yodeler?

Jimmie Rodgers first recorded in the late 20's, he grew up listening to blacks play their blues, a lot of his stuff is simply a white guy playing them blues. But being white it was labeled "country".

Whlie Rodgers and The Carter Family get a lot of credit for pioneering country music there were others before them. Kelly Harrell, Eck Roberson, Darby & Tarlton for example. As you alluded to it's all about influenses.

I'll have to check those guys out. Did they do any yodeling? The black influence on the blues element of Rodgers is clear, being that he was from the South. But I always wondered how the yodeling found its way into the music. Where any of those guys you mentioned yodelers?
