Fan dies after eleven nights of football
A Chinese football fan has died after going without sleep for eleven nights as he watched every single match of the Euro 2012 compe ion.
26-year old Jiang Xiaoshan died of exhaustion on Tuesday morning after reportedly staying up each night with friends to catch every kick of the European football compe ion, and then going to work the next day.
Following the final match of Group C, when Ireland took on Italy, Xiaoshan reportedly went back to his Changsha home at 5am, took a shower, and never woke up from the slumber he fell into.
While friends were shocked at the news of his death because he lived a 'relatively healthy life', sources revealed the effects of alcohol and tobacco, combined with chronic exhaustion, caused the weakening of his immune system that eventually led to his death.
During other major international football compe ions, such as the World Cups of 2006 and 2010, reports also surfaced of people admitted to hospital with sleep deprivation related issues.
In South Korea, sleep deprivation from playing online video games is causing serious health issues as the country's government looks at introducing a 'Cooling Off' system to regulate playing times.
In an attempt to stamp out online bullying and prevent suicides linked to internet and video game addiction, the policy will see games switched off after two hours before another limited session is allowed.
In February, it was revealed a Taiwanese gamer had lay dead for nine hours in an internet cafe before anyone noticed. The 23-year old was thought to have suffered a heart attack after playing an online game for around 23 hours straight.
