    1000 - 1500 for a tablet?

I do want a windows 8 tablet, but I was expecting them to be around $800
Well, you can supposedly buy the lower-end model for that much. It only does Windows 8 RT though (Metro only).

With USB and HDMI ports, though, and the included kickstand and keyboard/cover, AND the fact most laptops will eventually feature Windows 8 anyway, you have to assume this will be every bit as appealing to people looking for an Ultrabook as it is to people looking for a tablet.

The fact it can be easily used as a laptop, without sacrificing convenience or requiring a ton of peripherals, has even piqued my interest, and I'm someone who has been largely unimpressed by both tablets and the Windows 8 tablet-y interface.

Seriously? It's a quad core I5 Ivy Bridge in a relatively tiny form factor. Performance wise this will eat the iPad ALIVE. The pro version shouldn't even be compared to tablets, because it's a full PC. The ARM based version will be very interesting to see.

payin 1000-1500 for a tablet or ultra is stupid, you might as well pay for a high end gaming laptop for that sort of price and still come out on top of the ulta besides its dimensions

ps. ssd are fkn dirt cheap now, they are like below $1 per GB now....hopefully i grab one soon

just grabbed a monster laptop for $1000. nothing beats windows for power/price combination.

MSFT will be selling their RT casual tablets cheaper than ipads
but their Pro tablets will probably be close to $1000

You will probably be able to buy one of those from a third party (Dell, HP, etc)

Won't be a "Surface" though... I actually think that's going to be one of the interesting sub-plots to see here. How MSFT is going to react to the very likely possibility of semi-clones from other vendors.

no it won't be a surface. The surface will have other specs, but if you don't like them, then move on to a 3rd party OEM

I wonder what their service strategy will be for MS branded hardware like this outside of outsourcing to CTS/Flextronics like everyone else.

so, the tablet is a part of the setup? Like a glorified controller? or just an alternative, portable gaming system?

I don't even know how to make sense of that. What's the purpose of the XBox Surface?

Does it replace the XBox you have at home meaning you have a portable XBox that you can take anywhere?

Also, what good is this folding keyboard if you can't even use it in your lap? Odd MS didn't give ANYONE an opportunity to use it at the keynote.

edit: it's not that unusual to let no one handle it.

The folding keyboard can probably be used in your lap. Not as comfortable as a laptop would be though. Probably better to use it as a tablet if you're not by a table or desk, which I'm fine with. It's a downside to it, but I think the upside of the product--that you don't need to have it in your lap or on a desk or table when your casually computing--outweighs it.

Yeah, the new HDMI 1.4 standard supports up to 2560x1440 without needing a displayport or dual-link DVI...

Would have preferred support for full 2560x1600, but oh well...

Quad HD is coming... Just not for another 15 years...

I recall Deep Space Nine had tablets so technology is a few centuries ahead of schedule.

It's something that WC is advocating that the tech industry develop. Unfortunately, he keeps getting rebuffed.
