For the last several years, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has been trying to package assets together to make a big deal on draft night. The 2012 draft is no different.

Sources say that Houston has discussed deals with several teams in the top 10 about moving up in the draft. And the Rockets might have found two willing partners.

Although sources stressed that no deal is imminent, Sacramento (No. 5) and Toronto (No. 8 ) have let Houston know that their top-10 selections are available. Sources say that the Rockets, in turn, have made both of their first-round picks available (No. 14 and No. 16), but the key to any trade going through could be point guard Kyle Lowry.

The Raptors have been especially fond of Lowry
, who has been regarded for months as a borderline untouchable in Houston but more recently has publicly expressed his disastisfaction with Rockets coach Kevin McHale. Whether the Rockets are indeed prepared to part with Lowry, as talks with the Kings, Raptors and other teams continue, figures to be one of the bigger stories of draft week.

What’s clear from the Rockets’ end, sources say, is the player they’re fondest of in the upper reaches of the draft: UConn big man Andre Drummond. Many scouts believe Drummond has the second highest upside of any player in the draft behind consensus No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis, but the 7-foot, 279-pounder would almost certainly still be available at No. 5.

Drummond, as the second youngest player in the draft at 18, registered an impressive 7-foot-6 wingspan at the NBA Draft Combine earlier this month. Personnel experts regard him as an elite athlete and shot-blocker who moves laterally especially well. But Drummond’s inconsistent play as a freshman, combined with questions about his passion for the game, have caused his draft stock to take a slight hit in recent weeks.

The tipoff that the Kings are likely to deal the No. 5 pick between now and Thursday night, sources say, is the handful of players they’ve brought in that are expected to be drafted in the middle of the first round. Sources say two of those players in particular – North Carolina’s John Henson and St. John’s Moe Harkless – are high on the Kings’ draft board.

Henson has already worked out for the Kings and Harkless is scheduled to work out on Monday. Sacramento has also tried to get several other candidates for the middle of the first round, including UConn’s Jeremy Lamb and Washington’s Terrence Ross, into town for 11th-hour workouts.

Scouts are full of ; Drummond has higher upside than Unibrow too. Still, it's like taking all your chips and betting on 12.

Even if Drummond isn't there, I'd still trade Lowry for #5 and hand the PG duties to Dragic.

Dragic did play well in later half of last season, very well. Forgot how many points but more than 8 assists a game in one extended stretch

Lowry's gone either way. But if they move up to draft Drummond, I have a feeling they'll flip him to Orlando because they still want to rent Dwight.

Lowry's going to be that guy everyone calls underrated for a couple of years, gets a huge FA deal, then doesn't live up to it and everyone pretends they knew all along that he wasn't very good.

The Houston Rockets's willingness to trade for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard even if he refuses to sign a contract extension with them--to trade for Howard on a rental basis, so to speak--is one of the NBA's worst-kept secrets. And as Chad Ford and Marc Stein report jointly for ESPN.com, the Rockets haven't given up on renting the superstar: they're looking to obtain two top-ten picks in Thursday's NBA Draft in order to create a strong trade package for new Magic GM Rob Hennigan to consider.
If Houston can parlay its assets, perhaps budding star point guard Kyle Lowry and its 14th and 16th overall picks, into two high-lottery selections, then it could turn around and offer those new picks, as well as expiring contracts such as Samuel Dalembert and Kevin Martin, to the Magic in exchange for Howard and one of the Magic's bad deals.
As Ford and Stein note, this trade would be a tough sell for Hennigan, who only took the job Wednesday and may not be looking to trade Howard just yet. And for him to even consider such a transaction, the Rockets would have to wheel and deal themselves in order to get those high draft picks, so the possibility of a Howard trade to the Rockets looks slim. But it's early in the NBA offseason. Stay tuned.

A risk they have to take. Trade for the 5th and 8th picks, flip for Dwight in a package, then go out and sign Deron. By signing Deron first, Dwight agrees to an extension. If the Magic don't trade Dwight to Houston, then you still have 2 top 10 picks.

Well 2 top 10 picks sounds like it'll be tough to do. I understand Lowry would net us one, but I can't figure out how we'd get another.

Drummond would need a few years to make his impact and teams want to draft instant starters. He does have more of an NBA ready body, though.

Sacramento wants to trade down too. Scola, possibly Patterson, 14 + 16 picks to Sacramento for 5th.

For the Rockets. A top 5 pick is a valuable piece, and it would be very surprising to me if we could nab it for 14+16 and Scola/Martin.

Why do the Raps want him? Decent player, but what's the ceiling? Plus you have Calderon already who is decent and Bayless. I know right now Lowry is better than those guys but so what...Unless Val is really great and comes over and they make other moves they aren't that good and you lose a pick.

I guess their thinking is Calderon is older and expiring and getting a surer thing with the 8th pick that is still relatively young is worth it. Not a terrible strategy but doesn't make a lot of sense for a team like the raps.

I think Dalembert could be in the deal for Sacramento because they want to move Cousins to PF and have someone start next to him.

Idk why, but here's a quote from Dwayne Casey.

Raptors head coach Dwayne Casey told the Toronto Sun, "He's a of a compe or. He's their heart and soul and spirit of their team and I love the way he plays."

Lowry is much more valuable to the league not because of his basketball skills, but the contract that he plays for. He is a bargain for the level of play he will bring you.

If the Rox acquire two top 10 picks and trade them to Orlando in a package for D-12, I think they will rue the day that happens. With his back issues, I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole tbh. I doubt he will be the same player he was prior to getting injured (which required surgery). He already relied too much on his physical abilities to begin with and has a weak low post game. He used to out run, out quick, and out jump his compe ors. Now? Doubtful.

Offseasons are the time to hone your skills and work on your overall game. Thiis offseason will be spent rehabbing. As a Laker fan, looking at what Bynum has gone through over the years, it's no wonder that his two best years (2007-2008: he was breaking out before Kobe fell on his knee v. Memphis. We were 1st place BEFORE we got Gasol; and 2011-2012: 18/11/2) occurred after an injury free summer. D-12 won't have the luxury of working on his game this summer. When is he cleared to have full physical contact anway?

His God-given abilities will take a hit IMO. How much? Who knows - that's why H-Town should not take the chance. There are several players that were just not the same after surgery. Don't do it Daryl.
