I wish it was more flexible though. The only true canidate we have left for the amnesty is Bonner.
Somehow there is still confusion about this even after a year of people being corrected about it. For the record, the Amnesty Clause only applies to players that were on the Amnestying team's roster at the close of the 2010-2011 season. So for example the if the Spurs were to amnesty someone, they would have had to have been on the team at the end of the 2010-2011 season. That person is still paid their remaining salary by the team, with exceptions for non-guaranteed and partially guaranteed salary which are paid on a different scale. The contract must have been in effect by the end of the 2010-2011 season, and cannot be applied to extensions.
Amnestied players then undergo a waiver process in which they can be bid on and claimed by teams under the salary cap. The winning bid amount is paid is deducted from the amnestying team's financial obligations to the player, however they cover the rest of the original contract's amount.
You also cannot resign an amnestied player until the duration of their amnestied contract has run out.
This means that:
You Cannot Amnesty a player you have traded for
You Cannot Amnesty a player who has signed an extension after the end of the 2010-2011 season.
You Cannot Amnesty a free agent signed to your team after the 2010-2011 season
You Cannot Amnesty a player and then immediately resign them to a smaller contract
You Cannot trade your Amnesty
Its time to stop all the "lets trade for a ty contract and amnesty him" talk. It can't be done.
I wish it was more flexible though. The only true canidate we have left for the amnesty is Bonner.
not gonna happen how very unfortunate
I think they will amnesty Bonner. With the news that Lorbek wants to head over, and considering he is going to fill the role of a "stretch big" it gets rid of Bonner's purpose. It would also give us slightly more financial firepower to make a move for somebody like Kaman
At this point Bonner is really their only viable amnesty candidate. Guys like Blair, Kawhi, and Neal outproduce their contracts already so its not worth amnestying them. Splitter is worth the $3.9 million he makes, and if the Spurs wanted to get rid of him they could find a trade partner.
Sjax can't be amnestied because he was traded for. Duncan's contract is up so he can't be amnestied. Manu is an expiring, not that the Spurs would amnesty him. And Tony (assuming he is healthy and can see out of more than one eye) is the Spurs best trading piece very little chance he is amnestied.
That leaves Cory Joseph and Bonner. Joseph is owed $1.1 million with team options after the 2012-2013 season, Bonner is owed $3.6 million and 3.9 in 2013-2014 (with only somewhere around 1.5 guaranteed). Neither contract really gives you much capspace, but amnestying Bonner might allow them to offer a little more to a potential FA.
They don't have the money to get Kaman....
"They should amnesty Parker since he got glass in his eye." - Spurs Fans
This is probably more of a Bruno question, but does anyone know what the cap ramifications would be if Parker was forced to retire due to the whole glass in the eye thing?
I'd amnesty Bonner for the corpse of Sammy Davis Jr.
u amnesty parker if that injury is serious
just like how the suns didnt give amare the max he wanted cause of his eyes or some
You amnesty Bonner just so you can offer more to Diaw. Having Diaw around makes Bonner redundant.
And allow the Spurs to bring in Lorbek.
His salary would be taken of cap 1 year after the injury.
Regarding the amnesty, If Spurs want to use it this year, they must do it between July 11th and July 17th (included). Using it on Bonner might be a strong possibility.
Does Pop dislike him enough after he disappeared in the WCF (even though he was doing okay in the first two rounds) again by now that the FO can consider amnestying him?
What are his stats for those first two rounds. I may be wrong, but if seemed like he only hit about 1 shot per game for the whole playoffs. I'd have to look it up, but that still wouldn't change my opinion if he hit more shots then I recall in the first couple of rounds.
When shooting is your only skill and you can only barely make 1 shot per game, then 3 million is just way too much money. You can get almost anyone to do that for a cheaper price. I won't mention his choking and all around gutless play in the playoffs. The FO must get rid of him or use the amnesty on him if they can't trade him.
If the Spurs amnesty Bonner (which they should), it would just be the final coup of the Richard Jefferson trade.
Spurs still have to pay the remainder of the ginger's salary but it will be worth it. I don't want playoff chokers playing on this team.
What, Parker has a glass eye. I knew there had to be a reason he played so bad against the thunder. AAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Probably not. He seems like he wants to play for a contender though, and if Bonner's money goes to Lorbek we would at least have the full sized MLE at our disposal, which is what a player can expect if joining a contending team. Unless he resigns with the Hornets, who have a ton of cap space
The whole point of it was to allow the team to get out of bad contracts they signed. If they trade for a player then it was another team that signed them to a bad contract.
It doesn't work that way. Lorbek has to be signed using an exception. Using the amnesty on Bonner does not create a new exception.
