Sure, but then you have to drive around in a Jap-designed car with a Jap-engineered motor. If you want something that actually performs, you go German. VW and Audi vehicles will last just as long and are better engineered. BMWs are close behind VW and Audi in reliability, but they perform better.

Chrysler has always sucked until about 2 years ago. Now I would buy one. It seems here lately the chevy products are kind of ty. They will get it right eventually, but in their rush to "catch up" they made some mistakes. (see chevy malibu leaky roofs)
Otherwise most cars are going to VVT engines and that is the key. VVT engines usually are problem free for most of their lives.
Quality comes and goes. That's all there is to it.
American cars, probably Ford although the Fusion is a decent car.
There are a lot of ty car makers worldwide though, a lot of them we never experience.
Toyota is one of the best though, and have been for a long time.

That depends who you ask, I've owned all three and the Bimmer was more dependable than the Audi/VW...although the only problems I had with the Audi and VW were electrical issues covered under warranty and immediately rectified.
The Bimmer had zero problems and free maintenance to boot.
Don't know if they've gotten any better but we bought my stepson an Audi. And every damn thing that went wrong was at least $1,000. Including fixing bad sensors.
It's a truck though. Regardless, the 6.0L diesel is the tiest diesel made that year and I've spent a ton of money bullet proofing it. It's got a ton of hp and torque and runs great now, but off the line they were turds.
Ford is notorious for over tuning their engines to get performance numbers to beat compe ion, then they issue a reflash on your first service visit and detune the vehicle to reduce service costs associated with failures related to the overtune. It's a shady practice, and they don't stand behind anything afterward and threaten you with warranty void if you do anything to keep your engine from self destructing by applying after market mods.
If you were to follow the evolution of the engine, even now they are doing pretty much the same thing by undoing all the they did to sell you the vehicle in the first place.
One thing they do keep intact is the emission control system, which is the bane of the engine's existence.
Ford doesn't give two s about it's existing customers. They just want new ones. Their idea is that new customers bring more revenue than existing customers. It's more expensive to correct things existing customers know about than to bull new ones with trumped up numbers and sales jargon.
So yeah, I have a butt hurt about them.

Audi has really improved in the past 5 years or so. My sister had an A4 in high school and it had all kinds of little problems. But that was back in 2004. I have a '10 BMW and have never had a problem with it, but my personal experience doesn't change the fact that, in general, recent Audi and VW vehicles will hold their value better. The Audi A5 is one of the most underrated cars right now. The way that car holds its value is incredible.
Those A5's are cool as . Have you seen the S5? Not sure if they arrived yet but some of the magazines have tested them and they are awesome. They are basically a souped up A5.
BMW's are also at or near the top when it comes to holding its value.
VW and Audi share a lot of parts,engines,etc and some Audi's are actually built in Hungary (my TT engine and VW GTI engines were built in Hungary and are awesome little 4 bangers).
Renault engines power Team Red Bull in F1, they know how to build amazing engines at the least, winning the last two les as well as being well out in front this year.
Yeah, I'm familiar with the S4 and S5, and I've seen a couple S5s around here. They've been available in the US since late 2008/2009. I got to test drive an A5 coupe, but never an S5. I was really close to getting the A5, but then I test drove a BMW 335i coupe and I was sold. It made me realize how slow the A5 was. The S5 and 335is are awesome, but were a few grand over what I had decided I would spend on a car.
I'm not sure about parts and such, but I had thought Audi and VW shared certain engines (e.g. the A4 and the Jetta).

Yeah, the global architecture is blurring a lot of the lines and carmakers save money by building a platform which can be used for different models with a few tweaks.
The 2.0 turbo in the VW GTI is the same engine as in the Audi TT...and the TT can be tuned higher since Audi charges a lot more $$
