Bill Nye slams creationism
By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor
(CNN)–Famed TV scientist Bill Nye is slamming creationism in a new online video for Big Think led "Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children."
"Denial of evolution is unique to the United States," Nye begins in a YouTube video posted on Thursday. The video quickly picked up steam over the weekend and as of Monday morning had been viewed more than 1,100,000 times.
Nye – a mechanical engineer and television personality best known for his program, "Bill Nye the Science Guy" – said the United States has great capital in scientific knowledge and "when you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in it, it holds everyone back."
"Your world becomes fantastically complicated if you don't believe in evolution," Nye said in the Web video.
Creationists are a vast and varied group in the United States. Most creationists believe in the account of the origins of the world as told in the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.
CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories
In the creation account, God creates Adam and Eve, the world, and everything in it in six days.
For Christians who read the Genesis account literally, or authoritatively as they would say, the six days in the account are literal 24-hour periods and leave no room for evolution. Young Earth creationists use this construct and biblical genealogies to determine the age of the Earth, and typically come up with 6,000 to 10,000 years.
The Gallup Poll has been tracking Americans' views on creation and evolution for the past 30 years. In June it released its latest findings, which showed 46% of Americans believed in creationism, 32% believed in evolution guided by God, and 15% believed in atheistic evolution.
During the 30 years Gallup has conducted the survey, creationism has remained far and away the most popular answer, with 40% to 47% of Americans surveyed saying they believed that God created humans in their present form at one point within the past 10,000 years.
Survey: Nearly half of Americans subscribe to creationist view of human origins
"The idea of deep time of billions of years explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your worldview becomes crazy, untenable, itself inconsistent," Nye said in the video.
"I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, that's completely inconsistent with the world we observe, that's fine. But don't make your kids do it. Because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need engineers that can build stuff and solve problems," he said.
Creationists' beliefs about the origins of the Earth are often a narrow focus, based in large part on religious beliefs, and while they reject evolution as "just one theory," they often embrace other fields of science and technology.

In "The Genesis Flood," the 1961 book that in many ways help launch the Young Earth creationism movement in the United States, the authors write: “Our conclusions must unavoidably be colored by our Biblical presuppositions, and this we plainly acknowledge." Their goal for the book was to harmonize the scientific evidence with the accounts in Genesis of creation and the flood.
The idea of creationism has been scorned by the mainstream scientific community since shortly after Darwin introduced "The Origin of Species" in 1859. By 1880, The American Naturalists, a science journal, reported nearly every major university in America was teaching evolution.
"In another couple centuries I'm sure that worldview won't even exist. There's no evidence for it. So..." Nye ends his video.

Not sure if this is posted yet but I agree with the Science Guy!

No way can anyone with a brain believe that some almighty whatever that nobody has ever seen or will ever see created the world and us humans, talk about ridiculous.....sheesh~~~~~~~
What actually happens was these little pollywog type creatues grew legs and walked out of the ocean onto dry land. Then after years and years of finding a female and male on the same beach at the same time they morped into elephants and lions and eagles and alligators and hippos and apes and spiders. Obviously us humans were once monkeys, not sure how we lost our tails.
there it is
What about tolerance and being open minded to differing opinions? Who cares if you think the world was created by a supreme being or if some explosion was the cause or it was some goo that transformed into everything or whatever the you think? Why do people about evolution and creationism? Have your differing opinions and shut the up.
another angry bible thumping creationist
lets round 'em all up!
Where did you ever get this idea I was some Bible thumper? I haven't been to church since 8th grade, then it was only because I dug this girl who asked me to go.
I don't know what to believe and neither does anyone else. So they just pick something that makes them happy.
What Bibles have I thumped on? Where is your proof that I said I believed in creationsim? Prove it first then I'll give you props. Otherwise, you got nothing.
When things were evolving where are all those different stages of development?
Sea thingy became a what, that turned into a what, that became another what? On the way to become a full grown elephant where are all the other semi-elephants? Why are elephants only in Africa/India? Why no elephants in Hungary? Where did the first cow come from? Where are all those mini cow going to be's? Where did the idea of flight come in? A sea thingy becoming a bird....why?
Who in the is going to believe....
Samson was a bad bad dude but come on whipping up on a 1000 soldiers with just the jawbone of an assThey didn't have spears back then? Nobody thought...."look this cat is badass, he's already killed 200 of us, we need a plan".....who were these guys, the stupid patrol? Stand back and toss spears at the guy. Imagine what numbers 998 999 and 1000 must have thought looking at a mountain of 997 dead idiot soldiers. What..."I got him?"...

Here you go, Avante.

If you actually want to understand evolution (doubtful, since you probably want to ask stupid questions), do some research.
Why not get involved with the topic instead of me...ok?
I know all about evolution little fella, obviously ing around.
The bottom line is what difference does it really make, here we are.
How am I messing with you? I am discussing the topic at hand, so stop crying.
Your questions are really stupid. If you knew all about evolution, you wouldn't ask such stupid questions, serious or not.
You are so right has always, silly me. Be serious, stay serious.
Enought about me, respect the topic.
This is still my favorite video on the subject
I am talking about the topic, stupid.
No you're not moron, you're back to chasing me around again. So stop lying, ok?
Ok man I'm not wanting this thread to be all about me so...see ya~~~~~~~~~~~
So, you make stupid posts in a thread, and you expect nobody to respond to them? And those who do are following you around?
you have absolutely no idea how forums work, welsher.
Twitter was saying he died a couple days ago. Now he's resurrected and bashing Creationism? That's just hypocritical.
He died and there was nothing there, but then he brought himself back (he IS the science guy after all) to tell the world (on a seperate but related note, I have heard that his show may make a comeback).
Symbolic "days" timelength.
Earth itself could have well been billions of years in the forming.
Mankind is indeed only 6,000 years old.
Every *missing link* ape bone has been exposed.
*Mutations*? They may change a little but the NEVER *mutate* into a different species. A fruit fly always remains a fruit fly, albeit with a few color changes.
Woo Bum is just a troll. Don't expect a serious conversation.
I hope you aren't serious.
Things evolve because they NEED to adapt. This can be said for the existence of the Universe. Evolution isn't random. It doesn't happen for the of it.

If Neil DeGrasse Tyson is so knowledgeable about the universe why should NASA have to spend $18.7 billion exploring Mars when they could have just asked him what was there.
