SEAL book raises questions about bin Laden’s death

WASHINGTON (AP) — A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Doesn't really matter. SEAL teams ROE on an assault like that don't require that someone be a direct threat before they whack them.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a “point man” going up the stairs. “Less than five steps” from top of the stairs, he heard “suppressed” gunfire: “BOP. BOP.” The point man had seen a “man peeking out of the door” on the right side of the hallway.
The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns’ laser sites on bin Laden’s still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.
    Sweeeeeeeet!

Is the point here that bin Laden shouldn't have been killed if he didn't present a clear threat?

I can't imagine that's actually the point; I can only guess, but I'd hazard one that the President would have been castigated roundly by his critics if the raid had resulted in bin Laden's arrest and not his death. Given that trying bin Laden for his crimes was surely never what anyone contemplated in seeking to bring him to justice, I'm not sure what difference it makes that he did or didn't cons ute a clear threat to the heroes who raided the compound that night.

I am not sure what the point is either. Anyone know? from the quotes posted it looks like the guy behind the guy who popped bin laden didnt see anything.

I think the point is Obama wanted the hit on bin Laden to look more like a capture attempt that necessarily went violent instead of what it was, a hit mission.

But, in the end, you'd have to ask Obama why the details were embellished.

I have a decent answer... to protect our citizenry around the world. Is this news that america has carried out extra-judicial killings? I am pretty sure that you wont get many complaints from people (americans) on this. Just look at CC over there foaming at the mouth.

How does does one version over the other protect our citizenry around the world?

Because one version keeps up the facade that the US stands for truth justice and the american way and are a good example for the rest of the world while the other shows that we are exactly like everyone else.

To clarify: America is a badass country, but we don't have any sort of moral high ground over anyone else, we just pretend to and hope to be able to use that later.

Were Obama's kill lists revealed before or after the bin Laden raid? I don't remember. Because if it's before, your rationale is pretty much out the window. After and, well, why bother with the bin Laden embellishment?

Look, this isn't a show-stopper; there are plenty of other issues over which to pound Obama but, I think it's revealing? It's also curious.

What is it revealing? Do you have a more sinister but more plausible explanation?

Nah, I just think Obama told the story in a way that was the most politically advantageous. The truth matters little to the man.

If he was trying to look tough politically (which he was), I would think he would say that he ordered them to take that mother er out.

Okay then, it inexplicable. Perhaps someone will ask him. Right now, the White House is saying "no comment."
