It's like they're having sex on the court.
Love it.
Don't really care.
It's annoying.
Hate it.
After the Sharapova/Azarenka semis in Flushing Meadows, I have read several articles that rehashed this question. One even states that the WTA has officially asked junior players to control their grunting and screaming. The opinions of the screaming range from "not lady like" to sexually arousing.
So what do you think? Is it an issue? Why?
Poll options:
1. Love it. It illustrates the intensity of the match.
2. I notice it, but don't really care.
3. It's annoying. I wish they toned it down.
4. Hate it. It makes me change the channel.

Nah...Let them grunt away. If it was men doing it there wouldn't be any backlash. Seems to me it's the family values crowd that would be the only ones to have a problem with it.
They're athletes, and if the noises are a part of their game then so be it. TV productions can just turn the on-court mikes down and people can choose to not attend the matches if it's too much for them to handle
A non-issue, imo
This thread reminds me that I should watch some porn sometime with the volume turned down and a Sharapova match turned all the way up. That would be some quality entertainment![]()
Men are doing it too. So are the complaints against Women sexist or is it a sound level issue?
That's the one that confuses me. I'm fairly sure that the grunts are an expression of physical intensity and that the women are not having orgasms on the court - so if you interpret those screams as inappropriate, doesn't it make you the one with the dirty mind? And shouldn't you keep that info about yourself private?
thanks for the idea, will be doing it soon. Porn has found its way to be funny.
Yes, I believe there is some sexism involved. How could there not be? Where is the outcry against men doing it? Ever watched American football? Those mic'd up segments sound like a bunch of animals rutting in the jungle. I think this is a classic case of a double standard.
Bullseye. It's the crotchety old dude hiding his hardon under the table that has a problem with it. Or, like republicans banging male paige's/secretaries behind closed doors and then going on a diatribe about the decay of "family values"
Pretty sure your thinking is dead on, Slomo, but since this is Spurstalk, I'm sure there will be a bunch of re s in here making some idiotic statements. Should be entertaining
Also, thanks for the upgrades and all the work you guys do to keep this place the shizz![]()
I'm guessing none of those articles you read came out of Europe, either... Well, maybe EnglandThey're known for being a tad prudish
I don't care that much but at the same time I also find it somewhat annoying, I am somewhere in the middle.
Actually about half came from European news outlets. The one that specifically focused on the grunting was from England, while the other dedicated a paragraph or two to it. I found it funny since at an average I read more about the grunting, than about the tennis that was played in that match - and it was a very good match.
As I type this I have the Djokovic - Ferrer semi final match in the background and its difficult to concentrate with all the Djokovic's grunting![]()
The Sharapova match was the loudest I remember since Seles was playing, it was utterly ridiculous.
OK, probably true.
Why? In which way?
the yelling and grunting by men or women is pure bull , distracting, uglyfying a beautiful game. I won't watch any matches when either is grunting.
I detest the asshole coach who started it all.
Ugh
ah
ugh

ahh
Why should the viewer care?
The only one that might have a complaint should be the opponent.
Really? Seriously? Are you freaking kidding me? This is what America wants to know????????????
Wow.

LOL...equating SpursTalk with the average American
white people problems
Tennis isn't a particularly complex sport rule-wise, and I'm not so invested in the game that I really give a damn about any little details the commentators would add. I wouldn't mind all the players doing things more quietly but if I have to watch it with the sound down then it's not the end of the world.
Need more polls about which burger is best
Ain't it great?
Honestly, it woke me violently from a nice nap at one point![]()
