New rules from the Obama Justice Department threaten to return Guantanamo Bay to the legal black hole it was in during the early days of the George W. Bush administration. The rules, which began trickling out in May, are to be reviewed Friday in a hearing before a federal judge in Washington. They restrict lawyers’ access to detainees who have lost their initial habeas corpus pe ions. The effect would be to wrest control of attorney-client access away from the courts and give the military nearly complete discretion to dictate if and when attorneys can visit detainees, how many attorneys may work on a case, what information lawyers may obtain and use in representing their clients, and where and how this information can be used.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinio...b19_story.html

"Some day, like Alcatraz or Auschwitz or other like places of infamy, Guantanamo will be an empty place visited by tourists. And on its front gate, there should be large signs with the names of U.S. presidents who enabled its existence. Guantanamo is a terrible stain on America and all we purport to stand for. "

are we ing braindead or what? re-electing this liar???

oh wait, it looks like Americans favorite pasttime is re-electing the biggest liar they can find:

Isn't Gitmo one of the most difficult places to travel to for a civilian right now?

I'm sure its restricted....the guys still at Gitmo are bad guys...in any other war they would have been shot in the head in the battlefield...do they deserve to be degraded and tortured like under the Bush administration? No....most are pretty low level Al Queda or former Taliban....

The only reason GITMO still exists today is because no country wants these guys and they will be killed if they go back to their own countries. The Obama administration has proposed bringing them to a state-side prison but the GOP has refused to allow any money to do so for fear that these guys will be afforded the same rights to a trial and evidence procedures as you and I...

Simple fix: close Gitmo and build some kick ass state of the art prison in Langley, Virginia and put these terror suspects in that prison. If America can waste billions of dollars doing nation building and policing the war in the Middle East, then surely America can afford this .

except they weren't in the battlefield. Most of those are suspect civilian detaines, that haven't been charged of any crimes. Some been there for years and years like that 15 year old that's grown up to be an adult there.

The only reason GITMO still exists today is because no country wants these guys and they will be killed if they go back to their own countries.
    LOL wut?

yep, it was the GOP screaming and whining about the huge, almost certain terrorist attack if the gitmo guys were moved to a US max security prison.

Repugs = TOTAL OBSTRUCTION, then Repug and asshole right-wingers here blame Barry for not doing what they obstructed him from doing.

Yep. Back in 2009 all 90 republican senators voted to block funding for closing gitmo.

Senate votes 90-6 to block funding for closing Gitmo.

    This thread is funny.

You have cheguevara with the Marxist-Leninist perspective (really sticks in your craw that that prison is in Cuba, doesn't it, you commie ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.)
You have Nbadan with the "whatever the Democrat leader decides to do is righteous and just" perspective.
You have boutons with the left-wing Tasmanian Devil perspective.

Boy, I bet we'd have a hard time finding a statement like this from you in 2008 or earlier. Probably could find a few from Team Red, though.

We already have a state-of-the-art prison at Guantanamo Bay, why re-invent the wheel?

No worries. I'm sure Obama is going to get around to making sure they all get trials just like he said he would. Give it time, he's been busy. He's the President for crying out loud.

the location of the prison or name or whatever is irrelevant.

the relevancy is that one of this president's main campaign promise was to close it down and stop the human violations. Well it looks like Hussein doubled down on both instead.

and that BS about Republicans "blocking" him is re ed. Even a child knows a president is not a king, and has to work with others to get done.

he should not have promised he wasn't sure he could keep. same as Romneinstein promising "repealing Obamacare"

Again, close Gitmo and transfer all the suspects to some kick ass state of the art prison deep underground near Langley, Virginia. Make it maximum security as . Why is that so hard?
