The real bad news is next up on the road vs a Ravens team coming off a loss. The Ravens haven't lost back to back games since early 2009.

    Seriously.

The reffing in that game was a joke. They ruled one Fitz catch on 3rd down an incompletion that was especially bad.

Kevin Kolb takes the win. Brady just unofficially passing the torch to the next great QB he's supposed to be unofficially passing the torch to. No surprises here.

Wes Welker isn't sure why his role has changed with the New England Patriots . He knows better than to publicly state his displeasure.

Welker's strange season took another left turn Sunday, when he found himself on the bench behind Julian Edelman to start Sunday's 20-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals . It took Aaron Hernandez 's first-quarter ankle injury to get Welker into the mix.

Welker's first catch didn't come until late in the second quarter, breaking Troy Brown's team mark for receptions (558). Welker finished with five catches for 95 yards. He played 63 snaps, 12 less than Edelman.

Welker lined up for 89 percent of the Patriots ' snaps last season. He was on the field for 65 percent of snaps in Week 1 and 76 percent of snaps in Week 2.

"You know, you want to be out there, I think, as a compe or and everything else," Welker said, via Masslive.com . "Especially on Sundays, it's what we play for and what we work for and you want to be out there.

"At the same time, (coach Bill Belichick ) felt like whatever was best for the team, and I'm for that. And I totally understand that, and I'm just there to help out however I can."

It's possible Welker's playing time eventually will revert to the levels of last season, but it's fair to wonder how we got here in the first place. It surely isn't about production -- Welker is coming off a season in which he piled up 122 catches for 1,569 yards.

Brady targeted Welker a team-high 11 times Sunday, proof the wide receiver still a) gets open and b) has his quarterback's trust. Welker seems like the same player. It's his role that has mysteriously changed.

Bill thought they had this game before it started, so he sent a message to his #1 receiver.

Instead, Edelman looked mediocre and made Wes look even more valuable.

    smh lol Bill

    Welker - 11 targets, 5 catches
    Edelman - 6 targets, 5 catches

In fact, Welker was easily the most inefficient receiver on the team yesterday in terms of "targets to catches" ratio (besides hernandez who was only targeted once obviously). I'd say this is less a case of actual effectiveness getting open, and more a case of Brady forcing it to his buddy and Welker not delivering as efficiently as any other pass catcher on the team. Brady forces it to Welker, Pats lose. Been the story for years now.

Game 1 - Welker has minimal role, Pats win
Game 2 - Welker has a big role cuz of Hernandez injury, Pats lose

Clearly Bill knows less Welker is a good thing, but the Hernandez injury has forced him to play Welker. Time to re-sign Branch imho.

    Sources: Patriots add Kellen Winslow

    Blogger Blitz: Patriots Add Winslow

AFC East blogger James Walker talks about the addition of Kellen Winslow Jr. to the Patriots offenseTags: Blogger Blitz, NFL, Patriots, Kellen Winslow Jr., James Walker

It took less than 48 hours for the New England Patriots to replace injured tight end Aaron Hernandez. According to sources, the Patriots have agreed to a one-year contract with former Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow Jr.
    More on Winslow to Pats

Adding Kellen Winslow was a move the Patriots had to make in order to keep running their two-tight end sets with Aaron Hernandez hurt, ESPN.com's James Walker writes. Blog
    ESPN Boston: Reiss on Winslow

Winslow's agent tweeted congratulations to Winslow later Tuesday morning, although no official confirmation has come from the team yet.
The tweet from Denise White, CEO of EAG Sports Management, read: "Congrats to our client @KellenWinslowJr for signing with the Patriots!!!"
It is no surprise the Patriots had interest in Winslow. New England brought him in for a visit two weeks ago and kept Winslow on the team's short list.
Hernandez suffered a right ankle injury in Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals and is expected to miss at least a month, sources told ESPN on Monday.
Winslow brings many of the same skills to the table. He's an athletic tight end with good hands. This also allows New England to continue to run its vaunted two-tight end sets, with Winslow projected to team up with Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski.
Winslow caught 75 passes for 763 yards and two touchdowns last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He's averaged 73 receptions for 792.3 yards the past three seasons.
He was released by the Seahawks earlier this month. The team originally acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay in May.
Winslow's base salary of $3.3 million for the 2012 season would have been guaranteed if he had been on the roster for the season opener

Super Bowl - Welker gets primary receiver role back after Gronk injury, drops pass that would close out the game, Pats lose
    Hernandez - 14 targets, 8 catches
    Welker - 8 targets, 7 catches

Aside from that one bad pass that Welker had to contort just to get his hands on the ball, he was easily the most efficient non-rb receiver in terms of ” targets to catches” that day

And he still dropped a pass that would have won the Super Bowl.
