It's been pretty entertaining the millions of times it's already been done. I'd advise a search/bump, rather than a whole new thread.

Wasn't planning on starting any more threads-thanks for the tip though.

I can't think of one singer/artist where I like everything they do/did. They all have a few tunes that simply don't match up.

Robert Johnson recorded 29 songs, 27 of them are great.

Yeah, I'm a Dylan fan too...he has the worst voice of all-time, maybe 2nd worst to Ashley Simpson.

Great poet. Great lyricist. Horrible voice. It's ironic b/c maybe his 3 best albums (BiABH, H61R, and BoB) were his 3 worst vocal performances. Thank Christ for that organ player
I'm just going give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're trolling. Dylan has one of the most distinctive voices in music. You might as well say Howlin' Wolf has a horrible voice, or Tom Waits. It's not weak, it's not off pitch and it's perfect for the music. Therefore . . . not horrible. He sang that way intentionally. Listen to Nashville Skyline for comparison. Totally different.

Dylan has a ty voice. He can't sing worth a damn. Does that make his music bad? No.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. Dylan's voice never bothered me. I actually prefer a voice with grit and soul over a pristine vocal. Just a personal preference.

    I like Dylan's voice.

But I recognize it is not "good" by any technical measure.

Same could be said for a lot of the voices I like, so I'm not sure I understand the consternation.

    {sigh}

I don't know why people have to lie to themselves to defend their musical tastes. It's just disingenuous and fanboi-ish, imo. Dylan is one of the greatest ever (and I admittedly have just about all his albums up until Desire), but the fact of the matter is he didn't have a great voice. Distinctive doesn't mean good--in fact his voice fit more aptly when he was mimicking Woody Guthrie. When he dropped that he sounded like a goat being slaughtered. It works in some songs (LaRS, etc) and sounds like death in others (Maggies Farm, Leopard Skin yadayadayada)

Obviously, it's a matter of personal preference, but I'm not being disingenuous at all when I say I like Dylan's voice. I actually prefer the "wild mercury" period over the Woody Guthrie influence or what came after blonde on blonde. Admittedly, he sounds like gravel through a lawnmower these days, but even that's doesn't bother me. I think just saying his voice is horrible is not very accurate.

Also, I never said it was "good".

Dylan's voice does suck relative to the compe ion. There are plenty of musicians of that era that could've sang/could sing his songs better. Of hand I could name Jim Morrison, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Lennon. But you don't listen to Dylan for his voice.

That's the point I'm trying to make. Great musician and lyricist. I just don't feel the need to blow him for every facet of his music.

No, Dylan's voice is damn near unbearable. His songwriting skills are hard to argue against, but his voice doesn't "go well with" anything.

And this is coming from one of the biggest AD fanboys out there.

Actually, even as a Dylan fan, I've often wished he'd recorded Blonde On Blonde with more of his Nashville Skyline/New Morning voice. That's the only (pre-80's) album where I find his voice borderline irritating, because I feel like a lot of those songs had a much higher melodic potential.
