Matt Bonner, preferably
When the time comes which player on the Spurs will defend him for most of the game?
I think Diaw is up to the task. I think his official playing weight is around 270 pounds which is up there with Dwight's. I think he can stop Dwight from backing him down.
I just spent five minutes looking for that photoshopped picture of him with Dwight Howard's body but came up empty.![]()
bonner has got this
As long as we force Dwight to take jumpers
Duncan would limit Howard to 10 pts and 8 reb per 36 min.
Then Blair and Bonner would let him score 30 pts and 20 rebs in the other 12 min.
stephen jackson any one?
Pop.
He is going with hack-a-Dwight
lets make it a FT shooting contest between Dwight and Tiago ...
First, I want to see what consequences the back surgery will have for Howard. It might have lost some athleticism which is problematic for a player whose main quality was that athleticism.
If Howard is back at his previous level, the best way to defend him is to be aggressive and physical. You can play that way with him because if you cross the lien and foul him, it's not a big deal given that he can't shoot FTs. To play that kind of defense, Spurs will need to have an extra big body on their roster.
Tim Duncan is still the Spurs' best defenders. Duh. Of course, Pop has the option of using Diaw and Splitter as big bodies, and he can always use someone to hack D12.
Knowing Pop, though, he'll have the Spurs focus on turning Kobe back to his chucking ways.:
I wonder what Rasheed Wallace is doing? He used to guard Howard quite well.

Tony Parker of course.
The ghost of Shaq's Lakers past...
We don't want to come off as bullies!
Duncan has done a fine job on Howard in recent seasons. Like virtually everyone, he's overpowered, but his superior length and savvy work to his advantage. He knows that Howard can easily get frustrated, so he gives him well timed nudges, pushes, etc., just enough to throw him off but not get called for the foul. Inevitably, Howard becomes more focused on getting calls than playing the game.
The real question is, who else is going to defend Howard? In a series, that could be fatal because Howard can basically play unlimited minutes. So even if Duncan stays out of foul trouble, there's going to be something like 8-10 minutes per game where someone else has to defend him. I have no confidence in Splitter being that someone. Diaw might be by default.
That's why, instead of adding 37 combo forwards to their training camp roster, it'd be nice if they added at least one true center, with girth.
