    Sudden Death disagrees.

Sure, it's got less Van Damme by half, but it's got Powers Boothe, a Zamboni, and a fight scene with a mascot.

Also, who sings that deliciously badass "Never Surrender" song at the end of Kickboxer? That's going on the iPod, IMO

A mulletted JCVD knocking out (or finishing off?) a giant, writhing phallic symbol is miles better in terms of textual analysis, granted. But in terms of giddy enjoyment I'm sticking with the Penguins mascot's death by industrial dishwasher.

So much win in this thread.

That said...Bloodsport is where I cut my teeth as far as karate movies go. I think I was 12 or so the first time I watched it and I immediately went out in the yard and karated everything I could find that would break when I punched it or kicked it.

I'm more emotionally attached to Lionheart because of the story, but Kickboxer has Tong-Po and that awesome dance/fight scene. Anything Van Damme did pre-1997 could probably make someone's Top 10 list, and I'm kind of shocked there isn't more love for Cyborg or Death Warrant in this thread. I think once they started treating his various drug addictions, his art, like that of many great artists, began to suffer.

But yea, Timecop is the critic's pick, Bloodspot is usually the fan pick, but there's something good in all those old ones. The new stuff, like JCVD onward, isn't total crap so you might end up checking them out on like a Tuesday/Wednesday night for the of it.

    Sylvester Stallone disagrees..

Van Damme, Seagal nearly came to blows in the 90s: Stallone
    Washington | February 07, 2008 9:28:42 AM IST

Action heroes Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal nearly came to fist-fighting once in the late Nineties to prove who was more tough, says fellow star Sylvester Stallone.
The 'Rocky Balboa' star has even revealed that he hosted a party in 1997 to settle the row over who was stronger between Van Damme and Seagal.
"At a party in my home in Miami in 1997, Van Damme was tired of Seagal claiming he could kick his ass so he offered Seagal outside into my back yard," Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

"Seagal made his excuses and left. But Van Damme, who was berserk, tracked him down at a nightclub and offered him out again," he added. Though the fight did not ensue the altercation between the two stars, Stallone is sure that Seagal would fall deficient had the brawl taken place.
"Van Damme was too strong. Seagal wanted none of it," Stallone said. (ANI)

I'm on record with love for both of those movies. I love em to death. Cyborg and his blade from his boot, being crucified and kicking his way out of it, the badass battles in the post-apocalyptic world, man all of Van Damme's films back then always had badass soundtracks.

Death Warrant was a film I always wished he made a sequel to. Like going undercover in an even bigger badder prison somewhere else, bigger budget would have been badass. I would watch a sequel to that right now, but he needs to get back to getting with better Directors again. I wish he got back to work with Peter Hyams instead of Peter Hyams son.

I love almost all Van Damme films the same, and I agree Lionheart is dear to my heart, story-wise.

And again, I also like Nowhere to Run, not many people talk about that one. That Triumph motorcycle, going back to help that family, then turning himself in. Showing more of his acting skills in that one, but he only does that with good directors.

As much as I despise Avante...he's right on this one. Seagal was an aikido instructor in Japan. Van Damme had nothing more than some low level kickboxing success. My money would be on Seagal if both met up in their respective primes.

It's not really surprising that Seagal didn't want to fight him. Most pure martial arts disciplines teach that in real life situations(not tournaments or demonstrations) their skills are only used for defense and not for just beating up someone to prove a point. I'm sure this was most of his motivation to walk away.

Van Damme can get butthurt about Seagal being disrespectful if he wants to...because the fact is that Seagal is about a hundred times more skilled than Van Damme will ever be. Van Damme is nowhere close to his level and he doesn't have to fight him to prove it.

It was Seagal that was doing the trash talking that he could whoop Van Damme..so why trash talk to begin with then if he's so peaceful and above all that? He walked away and even Stallone says Seagal was basically scared.

Btw Seagal had been talking that trash about Van Damme for at least 7 years before that altercation, year after year, and Van Damme ignored the trash talk for that whole time until this incident. Van Damme even spoke very good of Seagal through all of that, biting his own tongue.

Van Damme also finally asked him to fight him in a real ring with referees and Seagal has ignored this, yet STILL talking that same trash. If Seagal likes to trash Van Damme so much and then not back it up, then he just needs to shut up already. I disagree, I think Van Damme would whoop his ass, then and now. Again, Van Damme was peaceful about it for years. It's obviously Seagal who is really butthurt.

I understand the whole "I don't believe in fighting" thing, which Van Damme has always said himself as well. But I think it's very telling for someone to be so butthurt to basically cry every chance he can in media, talk shows, reality tv shows, etc for over 20 years now that he can beat up Van Damme, but then he runs away when he had the chance to prove it, then go and still talk trash even after that.

Yup...it's one of those endless ones like boxers from different eras.

As far as the trash talk goes...it's only been a couple of incidents from what I know. He something on Arsenio years about him not being a champion of anything and he said something about him recently on that cop show he did. That's really the only ones I remember.

Oh ! Van Damme is reuniting with Director Peter Hyams!

    http://www.imdb.com/ le/tt2395199/

Forest ranger and Ex-Navy SEAL Henry is forced by the drug cartel to help retrieve a major shipment of drugs which went missing on the US-Canadian border. While in the woods, he runs into a man who has a vendetta against him, but both men must struggle to escape the forest and defeat the cartel, while at odds and at knife's edge with each other.
Van Damme reteams with the director of ‘Time Cop’ for ‘Enemies Closer’

Jean-Claude Van Damme is on something of a roll lately. While we await the release of The Expendables 2, heralding Van Damme’s return to the big screen, the man has been hard at work on a couple of new action flicks. Six Bullets has been getting the most attention, which makes sense since it has DVD release date of of August 21st, 2012 from Sony.

But perhaps even more exciting is the prospect of Van Damme re-teaming with his former Time Cop and Sudden Death director Peter Hyams for a new project.
That film is Enemies Closer and it’s slated for a release sometime in 2013. The movie is described as more of an action-thriller than a martial arts flick. IMDB lists the plot as thus:
Deep within a forest on the US-Canadian border, two sworn enemies must work together to escape a ruthless drug cartel -bent on retrieving a drug shipment which went missing there.
Tom Everett Scott and Orlando Jones co-star alongside Van Damme.

After Dark’s website lists Enemies Closer as being in pre-production. That said, the poster for the film premiered at Comic Con (also check out a fan-made poster). Stay tuned to Cityonfire.com for the latest updates as they’re made available. The prospect of Van Damme reuniting with his Time Cop director is exciting, to say the least.

    Such as these two..

Seagal does seem to talk a lot of , guess it didn't help against Gene Lebell. Funny thing is as badass as seeing Van Damme roundhouse Seagal, if it happened there would be no evidence back then. Nowadays, every er at that party would have their phone ready, as they should.

JCVD must be cool with Hyams, IIRC Hyams' son directed Van Damme in the recent Universal Soldier sequel. Hyams is an interesting director since he is his own Director of Photography as well.
