    LG Optimus G Nexus

Ready to learn all about the next Nexus? According to our pal Taylor from Android and Me, the next in the program will indeed be made by LG and will be dubbed the Optimus G Nexus. For a couple of weeks now, rumors surrounding the next Nexus included LG, but Taylor claims to have essentially confirmed it with a handful of sources. We know him personally and tend to take him for his word, especially in Nexus talks.

As you all know, the Optimus G is already a favorite of ours because of its more-than-impressive set of specs which include a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM, 13MP (8MP in some cases) camera, a brilliant 4.7″ IPS+ HD display, and a slim body. The skinned version will arrive on AT&T and Sprint at some point in the near future, but according to today’s rumors, the Nexus version could arrive in November.
We would assume that the phone will be an unlocked GSM phone, sold directly through the Play store, and not tied to a carrier.

Along with the arrival of this phone, we should see Android 4.2. While the numbers may seem like it will be a small upgrade, it could bring with it better power management, a new version of the Google Play store, new features geared towards a new Nexus program (which we’ll talk about in a minute), and lay the groundwork for Android 5.0. There could be one major UI tweak though – a change from multi-page home screens to a more tabbed approach. Lastly, there is a chance that we see some sort of a “customization center” that allows you to choose from a stock Android experience or a custom skin from the manufacturer of the phone (Sense from HTC, Blur from Motorola, TouchWiz from Samsung, etc.).

And finally, Andy Rubin may take the stage at the end of this month at AllThingsD’s Dive conference to talk about everything a new Nexus program that would include the device from LG. This new Nexus program will employ a more open approach that allows almost any manufacturer to join in on the fun, as long as they adhere to some strict guidelines. They must include a stock Android experience and 64MB of secure memory for media streaming. They can toss in their custom skin as part of the previously mentioned “customization center” to give consumers choice, but the base must be able to easily support Android 5.0, the next big release following 4.2.

Let all of that soak in for a second.

Excited? You should be. If true, this would give you choices in a Nexus device and would make it less of a compe ion for OEMs. Rather than being disappointed each year with the winner of the Nexus battle, you may have a device from a variety of manufacturers to choose from – maybe even one from Motorola

Apparently, from now on, there will be multiple Nexus devices from multiple manufacturers, even at the same time, and it's just that the one closest to announcement is from LG. It'll be called the LG Optimus G Nexus and will be announced in early November.

    http://androidandme.com/2012/10/news...g-in-november/

Also announced at that time and debuting on the LG phone, per the rumor, is Android 4.2. Quote:

We are told the UI is basically the same as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but the homescreens are now shown as tabs.

Probably the most interesting feature of Android 4.2 is this so-called “customization center.” We speculated that Google would introduce some kind of official theme manager back with the Android 4.0 release last year, but it never appeared. If Google implements this feature like we think, it should allow users to choose between the stock Android experience or a more customized skin from the manufacturer.

If that's really how the customization center works, then that'll be terrific for Android. Imagine being able to buy an HTC and turn off Sense or buy a Samsung and turn off Touchwiz, all from within Android, rather than having to install a custom ROM.

will the nexus line not be subsidized? i don't really understand Google's behavior with Motorola either recently, they just dropped the ITC complaints against Apple yesterday.

The nexus line is subsidized now, though you can buy an unlocked GSM model straight from the play store for 349 right now. I don't see why that would change.

... and since no one said anything about my original pictoral joke, I will try this one.

I knew Verizon offered it, didn't know if anyone else could yet. That is a good unlocked price, but is the storage fixed?

It is always offered as a gsm unlocked first, but both verizon and sprint have it too (just to be clear we are talking about the current nexus phone - the galaxy nexus).

It is a fantastic non-subsidized price and I would buy it if I wasn't on a cdma carrier. Unfortunately the Sprint non-sub price is 569.

    not sure.
I had to buy a touchstone to go with my touchpad.

Basically, it has the internals to wirelessly charge, but you have to buy the charger to utilize it.

LG Nexus phone reportedly pictured; looking pretty nice

posted on Oct 9th 2012 at 7:54am by Quentyn Kennemer

Ever since rumors of an LG-manufactured Nexus phone have come up we’ve all been waiting to get a quick sneak peak at how it might look. Fingers were no doubt crossed that LG didn’t go with the “blocky” design philosophy they’ve seemed to adopt over the years, and it looks like we won’t have to worry about that if these photos are to be believed.
The corners are more rounded to look more like the Galaxy Nexus, there are no physical/capacitive navigation buttons, the camera and flash are offset to the left of the device, and the texture of the battery door that gives off a crystalized look (at least in these shots). A version of the device with a Nexus logo on the back reportedly exists, though it’s hard to tell which design will stand.

LG’s Nexus phone supposedly sports a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset so this is shaping up to be the most powerful Nexus phone we have to date. It should be a lot more powerful than the current Galaxy Nexus, and it looks like the S4 Pro chipset might even best the quad-core Tegra 3 found inside the Nexus 7.
Google reportedly revamped the Nexus program to allow more OEMs to create any Nexus-branded devices for the exchanged obligation of adhering to a standard list of specs. If that rumor is still true then the device pictured above above and below might not even be the only Nexus phone to look forward to within the next Calendar year.
Alongside LG, other OEMs said to be looking to get in on the Nexus fun are Motorola, Samsung, and HTC, two of which have already made Nexus devices for Google in the past. It would be a very exciting time indeed, though we’d honestly be happy to get just one device if it was as powerful as the LG-made one described above.
Should these rumors be real we are expecting to hear more about the next Nexus device sometime between the end of October and the end of November in time for a holiday release.

One thing that has never been particularly solid in the Nexus program is Google’s release strategy. The Nexus One kicked it off with a failed distribution model that excluded the traditional retail experience. The Nexus S came along and made itself a lot more accessible in-store, but GSM carriers weren’t interested in subsidizing it.
More recently, the Galaxy Nexus had a period of exclusivity on Verizon’s network which meant Sprint customers had to wait months for a release, and GSM carriers were still against subsidy; Google eventually began offering the unlocked GSM version on its Play Store for that very reason. Note that things were much better outside America.
We would hope Google has enough clout to pull a Samsung and get this thing on all five major US carriers simultaneously, though it’s not clear whether it will be up to them or LG to shop this device to carriers.
Another facet of the Nexus program we’re hoping Google will get a better grasp on is the firmware upgrade game. Unfortunately some carriers, like Verizon, controlled updates for the Galaxy Nexus instead of the updates coming straight from Google.
This meant users had to wait extended periods of times for updates as small as bug-fixing/maintenance changes, as well as larger upgrades like the all-important android 4.1 Jelly Bean. If the Nexus line is as successful as we’d hope it is carriers should have no problem agreeing to a hands-off approach when it comes to software. But whether or not Google will make this a three-pronged dance — with carriers having to agree to let Google handle software upgrades in order to sell the device — remains to be seen.
All told, this LG Nexus is shaping up to be one of a device and we can’t wait to get even more information once we’re closer to its inevitable unveiling. Let us know what you think about these shots in the comments below! [via Android&Me]

LG Nexus pictured again, shows up in Carphone Warehouse inventory

posted on Oct 10th 2012 at 8:08am by Kevin Krause

The unveiling of the LG Nexus phone is less than a month away, according to rumors, and with the way the leaks are picking up I’m inclined to believe we will be seeing the device officially by the end of October. Another set of images has made its way online, this time by way of an XDA Forums member, and they were accompanied by a fairly detailed list of specs.

For starters, the device pictured here only houses 8GB of internal storage. It also carrier an 8MP camera. The processor is said to be a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro clocked at 1.5GHz and backed by 2GB of RAM, while the screen is pegged with a 768×1184 resolution.
In related news, the phone has appeared in Carphone Warehouse’s inventory as the LG Nexus 4, available in both white and black. We’re guessing this is a placeholder name and not the actual final branding of the device. But it does make us wonder, what do you think Google and LG will call the phone? I’m still leaning toward LG Optimus Nexus, but LG Nexus G might not be out of the question.

The device is nice; I just have one gripe over it (looks-wise): The front looks like the Nokia N900.

I agree, it does look like every other (non-button having) android phone to me. That doesn't really bother me though since it is a nice easy design and I don't care that much anyway.

Dude! Nexus 4 for 299 off contract for 8 GB (boo) and 349 for 16 GB! OFF CONTRACT!

I don't like the storage options, but damn I might just have to really start fully integrating the cloud into my daily stuff at that price

Great price, but 16GB non-expandable doesn't cut it for me in 2012. I won't even consider a phone with less than 32GB internal if there's no microSD slot.

The push to cloud is premature and impractical in my opinion - many people just don't have the bandwidth to use on that. I use my S2 as my music player as well and I probably have over 12GB of songs. The best data plan you get here is 6GB, and I have nowhere near that.

I agree, this is kinda strange especially since the s4 has lte on chip unless they specially commissioned a run of s4's without. I am still deciding how I feel about this. On one hand I love my phones to be future proof, this is most certainly not future proof without LTE. One the other hand, if it runs T-Mobile's 42 Mbps hspa+, I could see it sufficing, plus at this price it would make it much easier to upgrade next year since you don't have to be on contract. No LTE and low internal storage suck, but cost is a great cure.
