Ole Miss doesn't suck, or at least we're not the worst team in the west anymore (thanks auburn and arkansas). It was a good win against a young team and terrible quarterbacks.

Who would be your #1 realistic option?
There are all kinds of names floating around...

Honestly, I want Petrino(former AU OC). Probably not realistic, though. Other unrealistic names that are around are Cowher and Gruden, even seen Jack Del Rio's out there. Auburn can pay Saban type money, so it's not ridiculous in that respect, I just don't think any of those guys would want to live in Alabama for the long haul

Dana Holgerson, Gus Malzahn(former OC), Charlie Strong, Gary Patterson (been passed over before), Art Briles, Chris Peterson, Mike Gundy (he's a man, he's 40), Butch Jones, Pat Fitzgerald..even coordinators like Smart and Chavis

Really, I like any of those names above. Strong, Holgerson, Peterson at the top. Auburn can pay significantly more than any of those schools are paying now and it wouldn't be a situation coming in where the cupboard is bare. Not to mention the recruits that are committed (if they stick around, an iffy proposition)

Whatever Auburn does, they need to do a couple things...Find a proven HC with experience in either the NFL or FBS and dangle 4M+

But, the reality is they'll probably hire some nobody from the Sun Belt or the Ohio Valley conference and cross their goddamn fingers.

Petersen turned down Florida, Stanford, UCLA, Penn State, and Oregon.... I find it hard to believe he'd go to Auburn tbh... I think he probably sees himself as the new Osborne, Bowden or Snyder, staying at the program he built....

Also, I think Patterson and his manboobs will stay at that drug ring in Ft. Worth....

Yeah, I realize Peterson is unrealistic, but I can dream

Auburn's AD is borderline short bus material, so I don't expect much assuming this scenario comes to pass....Which, even with a winless SEC campaign, is anything but a sure thing

SEC matchups today...my straight-up picks in parentheses

    Tenn @ (MSU)
    Auburn @ (Ole Miss)
    (Bama) @ Mizzou
    (Florida) @ Vandy
    UK @ (Arky)
    USCe @ (LSU)
    (TA&M) @ LA Tech

Still think the s are too inconsistent to go into Baton Rouge and win a night game.

Aggy better hold it down against a scrappy non-conference foe. Shouldn't be too difficult, though

Gators may be looking at a trap game on the road against Vandy.

lol Auburn. Gonna lose by at least 10, imo

edit: forgot about the second best game on the SEC schedule. I'll take the other Dawgs at home

Man, what down year for Auburn. I cannot believe what I am seeing on the field from them.

I assume you're past the point of frustration, Symple and just numb to college football right now?

BTW, thanks a lot SC for losing but did you have to look so goddamn bad. I mean where were those stupid mistakes when UGAg played you?

I predict another giant game next week that UGA totally looks out coached and out motivated in, despite equal talent on the field.

Its so bad that I am cheering for everyone to beat Auburn (although I've still watched every game) to hurry the inevitable firing of Cheezit. Still have a few friends back down there (who both have season tickets) and they're so pissed they both said they're not going to another game. It makes me sick to see them play this way. Look for an increasing number of empty seats as the season drags on, as well as some of these top ranked recruits to decommit. If Auburn was smart they would fire Chizik now and get the search underway, but they won't. I just read a couple posts on an Auburn board which states quite reasonably the reason is so ed up on the plains. Here they are:
A 1-6 start will definitely open the door for staff changes for 2013 but how bad does it have to get to make a complete change? For those making that decision, the question should not be whether or not Gene Chizik should be retained but whether or not they believe Chizik can turn the program around. I believe it's imperative that Chizik produce a short-term yet detailed plan on how he would correct Auburn's issues before considering his future as Auburn's head coach. The concern is not the current state of the program but how it arrived here. Before anything can be repaired a sound diagnosis must be completed to determine the correct solution.

This is my fear of retaining Coach Chizik at this point. Though I believe his intent to build the program into a contender was present, all of Auburn's shortcomings fall upon his feet. If he was too short sighted in the first place to recognize he was losing control of the program, how can we now expect him to find his way? If you were the victim of a botched surgery, would you allow the same doctor to correct his mistakes or seek the assistance and guidance of another surgeon? This is not about whether or not Gene Chizik is a good man but whether or not he is the right fit to lead Auburn's football program. He brought Auburn a national championship and he was rewarded handsomely for his efforts. He was also paid to maintain a high level of consistency, something he has failed to accomplish.

If the decision is made to retain Coach Chizik but with major changes to his current staff, what are the odds of him making home run hires with 4-5 new coaches? What assistant coach would be willing to step into a situation, where it could be a one and done situation if the team struggles again in 2013? Money can be a huge motivator but established or proven assistants also want job security and the comfort of knowing that they will be given time to make all the needed repairs and changes. This could be an obstacle difficult to overcome with a lame duck in place at head coach. Again, taking this option would require the assurance that Gene Chizik truly recognizes the team's primary issues and how to address them. Is there anything in his work history that would indicate he can do this?

At this point, the team can only play for pride the remainder of the season but it's obvious certain folks will need to come to an important decision regarding Auburn's future. I'm grateful I don't have to make that decision because there are no guarantees on any decision made. I've seen enough Auburn football in my lifetime to know that Auburn can and will overcome this season with or without Gene Chizik calling the shots. This thought alone brings some comfort but until changes are made, it will be difficult to be excited about Auburn football in its current state. You don't have to be an expert or coach to know this isn't close to Auburn football and the players are deserving of better leadership. As fans all we can do right now is support the players as they continue to battle through this nightmare of a season.

I really wish I could believe or have hope that we would go get a guy like Gruden or Cower or Dungee. That would be great. That would be a total grand slam and would immediately strike fear in the hearts of LSU, AL and the rest of college football. Sadly, that's not how we do things at Auburn. To get a guy like that you have to get out of the way and turn the program over to them. A guy like that will not come to Auburn or any other school without having complete control of his program. That's the problem at Auburn. We have too many people who want to have their hand in the say so of the program...and it's not Pat Dye though many like Finebaum try and convince you of that. Pat Dye doesn't have near as much power as people act or think. Instead of going out and getting a grand slam hire, we want to go get a guy like Bobby Petrino and tell him he has to keep Van Gorder and maybe one or two others and tell him who his support staff is and who his G.A.'s are and who his strength coach is etc. etc. etc. The powers that be do not want to allow someone to come in and run the program. They want to run it and have these little puppet coaches run the day to day operations.

All of this is fact...not rumor. And it's worse than this....And I don't want to go off on this a lot but I have been screaming to whoever would listen (nobody) that Tim Jackson needed to go since Cam was here. Tim Jackson's basic role is to watch over the coaching staff's shoulders during the game and report back to Double J, who by the way is just a puppet himself. Double J doesn't make a decision without calling 9 or 10 people and asking them what they "think". At any rate, Tim Jackson also takes the role of babysitter for any players like Cam that you may want to get autographs from. Now, some people probably think this is a good idea, but I ask you to look at how this effects the rest of the team. What happens is, you end up having the Auburn team and then a couple of rock stars who are treated differently, complete with entourages while the rest of the team is separate and have separate rules 90% of the time. It's not healthy for the team and it's not an effective way of uniting or creating a team atmosphere. If Auburn has a Gustapo, its name is Tim Jackson. Imagine going to work next week and your boss standing over your shoulder everywhere you went except the bathroom. Yeah...that's what Chizik is dealing with.

This is also the reason why I am not in favor of Auburn hiring Bobby Petrino and trying to keep Van Gorder or other coaches they like. If Auburn wants to take its football program to the place LSU and Alabama are in currently, they have to get a coach who will kick Tim Jackson off of the sidelines and run his program the way he sees fit. Auburn has had 3 coaches in its history that did this and they are our most successful coaches. Shug, Dye and Tuberville all told the powers that be where they could go. Tuberville, of course eventually couldn't fight it anymore and wore himself thin (remember Jimmy Raines) ....Enter Gene Chizik and the Gustapo. Now we're seeing Gene Chizik run out of steam and what it looks like we're going to get is another puppet of the powers that be running our beloved program. It's not going to work and it will never work until we get a coach that kicks these folks off the sidelines and takes control of the program.

This is why I believe we will not go out and get a big time hire and why we didn't go get one when we hired Chizik. In my opinion and I will state that this is just my opinion so as to not try and start rumors or whatever, this is why we will hire Bobby Petrino and announce it after the AL game. I hate it. I think it stinks. It frustrates the heck out of me, but I believe Petrino will be our next coach. Here's to hoping I'm wrong. Cheers.

As for being numb to CFB, nah, I love the sport too much and will watch regardless of how awful my alma mater is. This weekend was filled primarily with boring blowouts, as I watched Auburn and then the USCe/UF and UA/UT games.

That second quote up there gets about as close to an insider take as you will see anywhere. It's also why I think Auburn will make another bad hire when they fire Chizik instead of loading a truck up with money and driving it to a big time, big name coaches house.
