@ the EU and former winner Barak Obama bombing the out of Libya. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL what a ing joke of a prize.
Thought I'd make a thread about this year's Nobel Prize winners. Fascinating stuff.
With the exception of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine, I'm not familiar with the other prizes. I read some on the Nobel Prize for economical sciences and found it incredible in it's application to things like organ transplants (any of those amateur or professional economists that post here want to explain how this works exactly?). The Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Really Biochemistry) for G-protein coupled receptors was long overdue imo. Upon the elucidation of the GCPR and it's function, the world of medicine as we know today changed for the better.

I did hear the conference about the chem prize though. That is cool.
I thought the prize lost A LOT of credibility when Obama was awarded back in 09 IMO.
but yeah the EU winning, don't know what to say about that
Arafat won the Nobel Peace Prize; it has been a completely worthless award since. Still, LOL Obama winning it for not being Bush.
I get what you are saying to a certain extent but considering the past 2500 years of history having the UK, France, Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, and all the other member nations working towards a common purpose is monumental in achievement. Only 70 years ago those nations were the setting of world war 2 which saw more violent deaths than any other episode in history. You can go all the way back to Alexander, Rome, a millenium of Franco-Brittania and Franco Prussian conflict. It's quite an achievement in that context.
I also think it's unfair to say that the EU bombed anything. It was France and to a lesser extent the UK that bombed the out of Libya.
guess they had to honor the achievement before it falls apart and Europe is again riven by fairly predictable rivalries and resentments.
it's kind of like when they give an Oscar to some actor or actress who's about to die or conceivably might
EU as peacemaker? what about the Balkans?
this morning in Forbes Doug Bandow pointed out that premature recognition of seceding territories surely helped precipitate the war, the EU was essentially powerless to limit violence and war, and, once it started, did little but hold Washington's coat while it bombed the out of Serbia.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/dougband...peacekeeper/2/The poor, suffering American taxpayers continue to defend the Europeans from phantom threats even though long ago the latter were well able to protect themselves. Today the EU has a larger population and GDP than America. Although the EU played an important role in the continent’s peaceful development, the U.S. spent so much for so long to provide a military wall behind which Western Europe could prosper. A Nobel “shout-out” to the American people would seem to be in order.
nobel physics prize is a joke since it's only awarded to those tired old alzheimer-plagued bags who're gonna die soon. the nobel prize might be the most prestigious award in the world that every scientist or novelist wants to win, but if you're a physicist you must hope that day (you winning the nobel physics prize) won't come too soon tbh
moreover, awarding the literature prize to a is an insult to the past winners TBH
how so?moreover, awarding the literature prize to a is an insult to the past winners TBH
Not recognizing the role of EU in maintaining peace inside European frontiers is a sign of a deep lack of general culture at best.
Stupid illiterates.
not recognizing the role of the US in protecting that peace is a gross oversight to say the least, and awarding the EU the Nobel Peace prize confers more ridiculousness than honor, tbh.Not recognizing the role of EU in maintaining peace inside European frontiers is a sign of a deep lack of general culture at best.
because you are an illiterate stupid who does not understand the importance of EU creation in the peace process in Europe.
First of, giving the prize to EU has nothing to do with the role of the US in the world peace and second I'll be thrilled to know why EU prize confers to ridiculousness.
Oh look. A new sock puppet.
racial cleansing in the Balkans and the war over Kosovo come to mind as fairly recent historical counterexamples to the EU's peacemaking prowess.First of, giving the prize to EU has nothing to do with the role of the US in the world peace and second I'll be thrilled to know why EU prize confers to ridiculousness.
First of Serbia is not part of the EU and I do believe if it was the case like Croatia, Albania... a lot of the drama could have been avoided. Second EU is still a work in progress, the lack of military force has been highlighted as one of EU top issue in terms of integration, it doesn't remove at all the positive influence on the EU peace between its member. Denying that is just plain stupid.
don't think anyone denied it. but is surely oversold, and perhaps premature. give it another 100 years and get back to me.
Yeah, right, America, or any country, sacrifices itself, acts against its own best interests, to help other countries.
Every time I see comments about Obama's prize, I am reminded of the old Finnish woman in a restaurant who asked me "why Obama win prize? All he do is be neeeegger". She didn't even look around after saying it.
Did they claim that the EU was an external peacemaker. Better yet, sunshine, what/who do you think should have gotten it?
since when one need 160 years to give a prize ? your comeback is pathetic. In 60 years of existence EU members have lived in peace which didn't happen since forever, just that is already a great achievement.
