These teams open the NBA season tonight, and feature two players who are high on the starter-quality-defensive-PF wish list for many Spurs fans': Emeka Okafor and Anderson Varejao.

Likelihood of trading for either player aside, which would be a better fit with the current team? Would either be worth trading Jax for (plus Blair, Neal, and perhaps a pick if necessary)?

Varejao would make us instant contenders. His nose for rebounds on both ends is better than all or our guys combined (sans Duncan). Oh and he would immediately become the second best defender on the team period. He looks spry as ever in the first half. Only problem is he might not stay healthy.

Okafor isn't that much of an upgrade over Splitter these days, tbh. But in addition, sure he'd be worth it.

I love Jack to death, let's not forget how well he does in big games, but I'd trade him for AV for sure (though Pop would have to manage his minutes big 3 style), Okafor no.

Not only Omri lost his starting SF job to Alonzo Gee, but he also lost the backup spot to Luke Walton. Man that's sad.

Varejao has been arguably the most desired player on this forum for years, tbh..

He would fit perfectly, he's a tougher version of Splitter..great rebounder, mobile defender, good passing big, good pick and roll player and he can make the mid-range jump shot..

I'm not sure if Cleveland would salary dump, but Jackson/Blair/1st rounder is a no-brainer for the Spurs..

What are the rules about trading a player that team cutting him and the former team resigning him? Is that not allowed anymore? That would be perfect for Jack.

Can't be done within the same season. That's why Derek Fisher couldn't sign with the Lakers during last season.

Edit: I think the waived player can re-sign with their original team the following July 1, not 12 months from the waiver date as it has been rumored. For the Spurs to have done this with Jax, they would have had to trade him prior to July 1.
