my buddy is swtiching from iphone to android...

note2 is too big for him. Looks like LG optimus g and s3 are the options.

at first i thought optimus g was the nex4 but i guess not.

which one should he get for first time...i dont want him to regret his decision since i convinced him to switch. LOL

Nexus 4 is unlocked through google play store. Yes, if he wants LTE or needs more than 16GB then pass.

He's probably not a rooter, am I correct? Based on both hardware and software

One X+ (most attractive pysically imo, 64GB, HTC sense skin)
    S3 (expandable, pretty good skin)
Optimus G (fastest of three, not sure about LG skin on android)

Nex 4 is GSM only (which is ATT or tmobile). He can buy it directly from the Play store, put an att sim card in and viola!

Heck, he could buy it outright, go to straight talk mobile (which uses the att or tmobile networks, whichever you decide) and get unlimited everything for 45 bucks (though I have heard they grumble about people who use more than 2-3 GB a month). I am probably going to do this when my sprint contract is up.

    This.

Straight Talk using AT&T towers offers a $45/mo plan with unlimited minutes/unlimited texts/"more or less" 2GB data. This might be overall the best plan for the average smartphone user.

Another option (if T-Mobile coverage is good in his area) is to get the $30/mo T-Mobile prepaid plan with unlimited texts/5GB data/100 minutes (if he's not a heavy caller).

Tally up one's total expenses over 24 months with either prepaid option, toss in $350 for the Nexus 4, and compare to what people would normally pay for a subsidized phone on a 24-month contract. People might be surprised at how much could be saved.

Of course, all this is moot if the person REALLY needs to have LTE.

Verge gave the Lumia 920 a 7.9, which is fairly low compared to the iPhone and top Android phone reviews.

RE: T-Mobile 30 dollar plan. If he does call a lot, he could still use grooveIP for voip calling using his google voice account (my google voice number is the same as my telephone number). I won't do that one though because my parents condo at the beach doesn't have great t-mobile connection. Also, both of those prices are what you pay. No fees or taxes added.

It seems that the folks over at verge greatly prefer the 8x over the lumia.

the one thing i really like about my noteII is its battery life. plus, i love asking galaxy questions only to receive, "that's a difficult question to answer...let me do an internet search for you."

the phone is definitely awesome at the upgrade price but i could never see myself spending double the amount, ever. android has come a long ways.
