If you've ever been stuck unable to watch a big NBA game over the last couple of decades and have had to turn to radio instead, you've likely heard JD call those games. It will be odd to not hear him interacting with Dr. Jack Ramsey when the playoffs roll around next spring.

Others might not have thought much of him, but I enjoyed his calls and his enthusiasm for the game and the league.

I just heard of his passing a little while ago. He meant a lot to me. I grew up listening to him in the 1990s. He was always "The Voice of the NBA" to me. I never thought he would die before Dr. Jack (who is 87!). You're right that the playoffs won't be the same without the two of them together, and Dr. Jack saying "JD."

The memory of him that will always stand out the most to me is his call of Jordan's last championship, in his trademark style: "Rimming, no... The Chicago Bulls have won their 6th NBA championship in the last 8 years!"

Jim Durham is also the one who made the famous call of "The Shot" by Michael Jordan over Craig Ehlo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shot), as the radio voice of the Bulls at that time.

His call is the second one in this clip:
