(This conversation has gotten dumb, but here goes).

I've heard Nevada referred to as West Coast, not the other two (but I also haven't had very many conversations involving Montana or Idaho ). Like I said, the term isn't used literally at all, at least in AZ. For whatever reason the term West Coast is used when Southwest would make more sense for Nevada or Arizona. A lot of it probably has to do with people associating SW with desert, NW with snow and mountains, so a state like Arizona or Utah that has a lot of desert but also a lot of mountains and skiing isn't universally labeled as NW or SW so people lazily call it West Coast.
I agree that it is dumb, but I was curious.

This is the world of the West Coast basketball conference too, right? They clearly don't have a problem associating Utah with the "West Coast" label.
I wouldn't use college conferences as a good indicator of geographical regions unless you want to defend Louisiana and California being in the same geographical region.

With that, I am done with the regional conversation. Thank you for enlightening me, I would have probably attributed Utah to the Rockies or something like that, but I have never really thought about it.

The Rocky Mountains are in some of the North of Utah but they are not the settled areas of the region. You may or may not recall the tales of all the men dying during the Mormon's crossing and thus the need for polygamy. Utah is in the western Pacific basin west of the rockies and like all of the other states that fit that bill, are sometimes referred to as west coast.

From a transportation and possibly migratory standpoint, the region could be considered semi- genous from an economic standpoint.

Oh you haven't done yet. You will probably just end up as a cubicle boy on the commercial banking side because they normally only move the smart ones to the investment banking side.

That'd be awesome. Then all the terrorists that hate us would focus on destroying Israel.
I don't think the terrorists' ideology with regard to the United States can be reduced to the Israel question. I also think governments in the region would be under enormous pressure from their people to take actions against Israel they don't want to take. Whether they do or don't, the massive instability caused either by social unrest (if they don't act) or massive Israeli retaliation (if they do) would disrupt oil production. That would have global impact, but disproportionately so in Europe, who relies on Arab oil much more than the U.S. does. Certainly the last thing Europe needs right now is an oil shock. Global leaders are working very, very hard to stop a European crack-up which would put the post-WWII order to an end. Once the lid pops off, you don't know where things are going to end up or how bad they're going to get. We take the last 67 years of peace in Western Europe for granted.

I think if the UN had a magic time machine where it could turn the clock back to 1947, very different decisions might be made, but of course it can't do that and instead has to deal with the present reality.

Perhaps you're right about that HS. I know that EU is leery about Muslim immigration in certain countries too. Still, I sometimes think that forcing the countries in the ME to "grow up" might be preferable to us having to play counselor/babysitter/guardian.

link that says Utah is considered west coast?
link? for someone as old as you are you certainly act like a child.

People sometimes merge the great basin and west coast regions. While you are fixating on the semantics of a label it's not lost on me that you started this bait and switch because you had no leg to stand on in the initial discussion.

That's a very nice way of describing the enmity that Mediterranean European states regard muslim immigrants. The French are especially lovable regarding the issue.

I was doing just fine in the previous discussion. This one is just more fun watching you two idiots flounder around and try to validate that somehow Utah is west coast.

Posturing is your MO lately. Typical.

Is? You completely lack nuance. And apparently reading comprehension. I said:

If they didn't have lots of the black juice that makes the world go 'round, the West would care about their affairs in the same way it cares about Mali's affairs.

Actually, Vancouver is a lot more west coast than Squaw Valley. Sure as wasn't Salt Lake City

    West Coast: California, Oregon, Washington
    Southwest: Arizona, New Mexico
(Intermountain) West: Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado

The West includes the Great Basin and all ranges of the Rocky Mountains east to the Front Range. Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana also include the westernmost portions of the Great Plains.

The Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains dominates the view east from Salt Lake City.

So then what exactly is your point if a West Coast City has hosted the Winter Olympics before?

Based on your previous argument Salt Lake City would have qualified. Glad you understand now it's not West Coast. Maybe you can convince Fuzzynuts now.

What's sad is that a ski trip there makes you think you are an expert on the region.

Is the majority of Utah mountainous or part of the Great Basin?

Also point to me where i said that I considered Utah to be West Coast?
