Andrew A. McNeill @drew_48moh The Toros traded Wesley Witherspoon to the RGV Vipers for Rick Jackson of the Santa Cruz Warriors. Vipers sent Santa Cruz a 3rd round pick.
RGV are the Rockets D-league team. It's somewhat logical they wanted him after his great preseason game he had against the Rockets.
Austin/Spurs were likely quite low on Witherspoon. He put bad stats in the Toros preseason game. Rick Jackson should help the Toros in the paint. IIRC, he was quite good in France last season before a season ending injury.
I liked WW a lot, but I'm happy with Jackson. Good rebounder.

I'm somewhat surprised at the timing of this move. The Spurs don't have a healthy small forward so in theory it would make sense to keep Witherspoon. A small forward prospect on the Toros who went through training camp on the Spurs you'd think would have some value. The Spurs/Toros must have been really low on him, as Bruno said. He had to have sucked in Toros training camp to let him go this easily.
Since Witherspoon sucked in college, it was always a longshot that he'd ever make the NBA. But, IMO, it's not an impossibility because he has prototypical size and athleticism for an NBA SF.
Hopefully this doesn't turn into a redux of the Sco........... eh, won't go there
Interesting. Looks like they're ending up with six big men on an expended 12-man roster -- 2 inactive. Might be thinking of trying to convert at least one of them to SF.
The Spurs did want Jackson after he went undrafted, so there's that.

After not getting drafted in the 2011 NBA Draft, Syracuse's Rick Jackson was invited by the San AntonioSpurs to attend their upcoming mini-camp.
However, according to his father, Jackson said no to the Spurs' invite and further said San Antonio should have drafted him:
But Jackson will turn that offer down, his father, Rick Jackson Sr., said in a phone interview Friday.
"(Rick) said the Spurs had the 59th pick," Jackson Sr. said. "They should have picked him then."
Jackson was quite vocal on Twitter about not getting selected in the draft. He ranted throughout the draft and when it was apparent he was not going to hear his name called, he said he will make every team who passed on him pay.

I was not so high on Whiterspoon as most people in ST. To me he played much better as a face up PF in Memphis than as a SF. FO was not so high on him I suppose. Anyway, GL to him.

How is he going to make every team pay, if every team passed on him?! Am I missing something? Shouldn't he be thanking the spurs for the chance anyways? What a dufus.
So.... wouldn't that be EVERY team? How would he make EVERY team pay? Not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed....

He should have a chance to get drafted towards the end of the second round and make a team's roster as a high-energy body, but will likely need to continue developing to find a long-term niche.

Well I guess, if he gets called up from the d league he could play well and dominate for the regular season(ruining some teams playoff chances and just giving a "beat down" to the rest of the teams) and make every team regret not picking him in the draft but then if the team he is on gets to the playoffs and his team goes into a game 7 situation and his team is down like 84-82, and the ball just so happens to end up in his hands with 8 seconds left....he could just hand the ball to the other team.
Effectively making every team pay.....but this highly unlikely, of course.
Maybe he intends to massively out-Chucky the legendary Chucky Brown, and sign with every team in the league at some point.
Then they would all pay. Oh yes, they would all pay.
Haha funny stuff. My first thought, was maybe "slamball" was still around and he was going to go make a name for himself there?? Then all the nba teams would CLEARLY see what they missed out on...
