net Galileo rating per 48 minutes = 44.7

    ----------

    Lebron James

    A) what the is a Galileo rating? Never heard of it and Google cant find it.
    B) while Duncan is playing great ball, no sane observer would claim he's better than LeBron, who is number one on everyone's list of best on the planet.

This does not make sense to me.
You cant say the detriment of a turnover is equal to the benefit of a rebound.
You cant say an assist is equivalent to a single point scored, or a point scored by the team while the player happens to be out on the floor.
    Etc
    but you do

No kidding. This is the kind of rating that one would expect to be conceived in the mind of a 10 year old with limited basketball knowledge.

"Hey I have a great idea! Why don't we just add up all the good things and subtract all the bad things!!!"

(Although I'm pretty sure this is a joke thread and the stat isn't meant to be taken seriously)

You can say these things, because I want to avoid the charge of being subjective.

For example, the straight up statistical value of a turnover may be larger than a rebound, but maybe those who make turnovers are the people pushing the ball, so maybe the penalty for TO should be less than it appears.

An assist is shared with another who scored, so maybe an assist should be worth a point in the system rather than 2.

Also, if you make an assist, your team just scored 2 points, so you really get +3 for an assist.

well, yeah, i didn't see the part where he had written minutes played i just saw the aggregate stats. i was just quickly trying to point out how silly a claim it is to make, not to mention how random the formula is. now i'll just point out that it makes a player more valuable to play more minutes, which lebron will end up doing, and so the per minute stat doesn't tell who is better, it tells you how good he is when he's on the floor. like with wages of wins, you have wins produced / 48 but then you have the total wins produced, which is what ultimately matters.

anyway i'm a little embarrassed i've said this much in reference to this topic so i'll end here

I think that rating was developed shortly after Galileo discoverd Jupiter's four largest moons in 1610.

Actually don't understand what you're trying to say here.

An assist is shared with another who scored, so maybe an assist should be worth a point in the system rather than 2.
The ability to create an assist should definetly be weighted higher than 1 point scored. I thought this stat was to determine individual player performance, but you're more interested in trying to evenly distribute team production evenly amongst all players on the team.

Also, if you make an assist, your team just scored 2 points, so you really get +3 for an assist.
And all it will take is a 3 pt shot by the other team made over Gary Neal who was stupidly out of position to completely erase Tim Duncan's assist.

There are so so many holes in this, just the fact that each of your arguments are based on "maybe"s is enough to debunk the whole system. There is no maybe in determining stats.

a lot of assists are just throwing the ball to a dude with an open three. If he makes it, it is an assist. But if he misses, the exact same play by the passer is not an assist.

In related news, the Drz Metric shows Matt Bonner is leading the NBA in net star points.

Net Star Points = (3P%) * (1 - Rebound %)^(# of red hairs on head)
