I agree, when it doesn't unnecessarily expose US capabilities that are classified. I will contend they wanted to see the US Navy flinch.
Or, the Navy (and the US Military) intentionally let this happen so they can go back to Congress and demand $100 billion more to upgrade fleet defenses.

I will say that is plausible, but I don't buy that idea as likely.
The chinese were just trying to sell some cookies.
Or, they were selling screen doors for submarines.
The limited thinking in this topic is unreal even for ST standards.
I agree, let's not forget that necessity is the mother of invention. The great US military thought it could just sweep through Afghanistan and Iraq and militarily for awhile it did...but those short term victories don't look so good anymore....the Taliban are back, Afghanistan and Iraq are governed by puppet governments just like under Saddam and Omar...and they can be brutal too.....we eliminated a lot of bad guys and bred many more in the process....we spent close to 1.8 trillions dollars and counting...more than 2.5 times the economic stimulus wing-nuts love to complain about, and gas is still over $3.00 per gallon..
...We are losing the war of attrition.....that is the new war the US will face....don't battle directly, fight and hide....very effective...
