At what point does Westboro get officially classified as a hate group? I believe they own the URL that is something along the line of "Hate s" - you would think that alone would be enough.

Just a guess, but I would think that there has to be some element of the group being actively involved in committing hate crimes or actively promoting that a hate crime be committed. Being a bigoted a-hole, in and of itself, isn't a crime.

I guess if you haven't heard preachers, you don't understand what they are saying; can't read between the lines. Huckabee never said this was God's wrath, or he didn't protect the school because there wasn't prayer. What he DID say is that we no longer teach moral absolutism; right and wrong, black and white - and that if you end up on the wrong side of that equation, you have God, ultimately, to answer to. Therefore, more and more people (Adam Lanza in this case), don't fear judgement day - has, as many on the board apparently have not, heard it described to them every day of their lives; be good or else.

He might not be right in his estimation, but THAT is the crux of his argument.

    what does this classification do?
Well, it they currently have tax-exempt status as a Church, that would be immediately revoked.

Other than that... well, not much.

However (and ironically), as soon as one of their protests incite violence, it is possibile they will no longer be granted the license to spew hate under the protection of the 1st Amendment. No part of the bill of rights limits the governments duties to regulate where there exists a governmental interest (yelling "fire" in a crowded theater, for example). If their speech begins to incite violence and threaten the public, then the government will have in interest in limiting such speech (to date, the tact is usually different in that government protection exists to prevent violence where they protest).

That's precisely the issue though. Where is this moral absolute? Morals in holy books are not absolute because they are man-made. You may or may not believe in an all-powerful en y, but surely you agree that the composition, editing, shaping and interpretation of the Bible (and all similar religious texts) was a human act, carried out and revised multiple times over centuries. And even then these works include illogical, contradicting, ridiculous information. The Bible's many imperfections reveal its all-too-human origin. Which is fine, since it's a notable work of literature, interspersing history, fiction and commentary.

To take that and claim that it's a moral absolute is laughable. By that moral absolute, Huckabee should be campaigning against eating s fish and pork. In fact, you could conceivably theorize that the reason your God lets murder happen is because people have been eating s fish without remorse for centuries. Also, Islam could claim that its moral absolute is the Koran, and the basis for misogyny, murder of non-believers, etc. Would you, as a Christian, accept that as a reasonable explanation for barbaric behavior?

The statement "live your life the way you see fit without harming others" is a much better moral absolute than any bronze-age writings. Moral philosophy is a complex area of study, and religion only attempts to trivialize it.

James Dobson Blames Marriage Equality And Abortion For Newtown Shooting

DOBSON: Our country really does seem in complete disarray. I’m not talking politically, I’m not talking about the result of the November sixth election; I am saying that something has gone wrong in America and that we have turned our back on God.

I mean millions of people have decided that God doesn’t exist, or he’s irrelevant to me and we have killed fifty-four million babies and the ins ution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition. Believe me, that is going to have consequences too
    .

And a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the Scripture and on God Almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on.

Tea Party Group Blames Connecticut Shooting On Teachers, Unions, And Sex

blamed the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut on teachers, unions, bureaucracy, and the presence of sex in popular culture.

He then went on to recommend a number of interesting solutions, including a lamentation that George Zimmerman was not guarding Sandy Hook Elementary School:

Homeschool. Take away the power of the radicals in the classrooms.
    Makes your kids safer, too.

Back Right to Work legislation for the public sector. Teacher’s unions have helped cement much of this in place. As long as we have group think in the classrooms we will never see the end of this.
    […]
Work to devolve power back to the parents, the local officials, and the communities. A society that is top-down will inevitably lead to alienation of the sort we have seen here. This young man was twenty years old, and his actions were neither spurious nor random. As an FBI profiler said on television last night, he undoubtedly felt powerless and sought to remedy that. Why does a twenty year old feel powerless? He could leave his mother’s home at any time at his age. He

feels powerless because he has lived in an over-bureaucratized society, one run ultimately from a far-away central location.
    […]
Restrict the sex in movies, television, on the internet. There is a reason why young people commit these sorts of crimes, and sex plays no small part. Their passions are eternally inflamed, and they wander the Earth with no outlet for their overstimulated glands. […]

Support the creation of local organizations to act as “neighborhood watch” for schools. Had George Zimmerman been at the front door instead of some mechanical card reader those children would still be alive. Perhaps it’s time we start asking for volunteers to protect our children. It will require security checks, but isn’t that worth it? This dovetails with the union problem; the unions will fight this measure tooth-and-nail.

How does he know Lanza was an atheist?

Regardless, the premise of what you just said is still re ed. Look at the religious Demographics of incarcerated Americans. Less than 1% of them are atheists. It's a complete myth that atheists commit more evil because they "don't have a god to answer to."

They want schools to equate religious theory (aka fairy tales) with scientific theory (aka stuff based off actual research and evidence) and can't understand why that doesn't happen.
