accessing home printer from the internet

so I have a canon wifi printer, and all I have to do to use in on my local network is plug in the IP address when searching for printers.

so now, how do I get to it from outside my local network, I've forwarded the 631 port, and tried "external_ip:631" but it doesn't work, and that's about all I know how to do.
