Portland is a cool town and the state is beautiful, but it's filled with the dumbest, beardiest, flanneliest, meth-mouthed, trailer-dwelling, canned-beer drinking, log-truck driving, hillbilly rednecks west of the Mississippi.
The people there, as you and TLongII both reinforce on a daily basis, have the biggest inferiority complex to californians I've ever seen. You also get butthurt incredibly easily when somebody actually tells the truth about your state.
It has its redeeming qualities, don't get me wrong, but to even talk about Oregon in the same breath as Cali is laughable. Just accept that your state basically copies everything california does (wine, craft beer etc) and doesn't do as good of a job at itPERIOD.
Let me amend that by saying the deep south states (west of the ms river) + Oklahoma are worse than Oregon (excluding Texas)

True story, the one person I ever met from Portland who seemed cool ended up being a fugitive wanted on 3 counts of murder who was working at the same place I was with a fake ID and a bull iden y.

The thing that always amuses me the most about this argument is that California is the third largest state in the country and is incredibly diverse in terms of its geography, population density, and culture. It's a massive state, which not even I fully realized/appreciated until I moved away a couple years ago. In the time it would take me to drive from San Diego to Humboldt County, going just along the coast, I could go on a road trip here that would take me through nine or ten states. And in that drive you'd hit everything from arid desert, to rough mountains, to coastal redwoods; from congested urban cities to empty rural farmland. So whatever complaint (or praise, for that matter) a person may have about a particular city or region in California, it doesn't apply to the whole state. While a number of the stereotypes may be true of a particular city or region, you can drive two hours in any direction and I guarantee those stereotypes will no longer be true.
It's something I'd expect more Texans to understand, frankly, considering how drastically that state also changes from border to border.
Yes, we have been "Californicated." That is a term used here long before the series ever aired. Inferiority complex? No. Yes, we have a large drug using homeless population which, thanks to the liberal city council, enables.
Butthurt over what others say? Well, I guess that's a matter of perspective. This state definitely has it's share of flaws. I will never deny that. What state doesn't? If you are going to say that California doesn't have even more flaws, then I say you are in denial.
This is still a very good state, overall. 30 years ago, before we were californicated, it was a far better state than today.

If Oregon didn't have the abundance of natural beauty + Portland then it would more or less = Oklahoma --- Same caliber of white trash with an affinity for meth, gun racks, and dirt
