Born In NZ high school in Australia played for Australia national team.

The big question is can he wrestle crocodiles for pre-game warm up? I think that would intimidate the other team.

Wecome to SA. Prepare to not meet lofty expectations and be hated before the middle of March.

Or he will show a few flashes of brilliance and become overrated like Pop Mensah-Bonsu.

It depends on the Spurs' cap situation (in addition to Baynes' performance, obviously). If the Spurs have cap room, then the poison pill won't take effect. I imagine they will if Baynes blows up to the extent that the Spurs would want him on a big-money deal, as that would probably mean Splitter wasn't retained or is ineffective or that Duncan hit a major breakdown and wants to retire. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a third-string center.
Thats simply not true. If Baynes turns out a good player (i.e. Asik level or better) then on his next contract we can only pay him a max of $5m in each of the first 2 years. That could mean a massive cap hit in a 3rd year, in Asiks case it would have cost them $12m.

Such a contract could have a big impact on our rebuilding efforts.

We should start a pool over who Baynes will posterize first. That and the rebounding and option it gives Pop to not have to always go small with the second unit is what I'm most excited about.

And now with Baynes on the team, is this the dunkiest Spurs team ever? Tiago's dunking now, Timmy's dunking like it's going out of style, Kawhi's dunking, and Manu was even throwing down some dunks before his latest injury. Now add Baynes to that, could this make the Spurs exciting to the average idiot NBA fan??
The Spurs were considered boring when David Robinson was here, and he's probably in the top five all time for spectacular dunks.

You're right. I thought that the exception did not exist if the matching team had cap room.

But that will only be a problem if the Spurs Baynes explodes enough to warrant 25/3 like Asik did. The only way he gets that opportunity is if Splitter isn't re-signed or if Duncan is ready to retire. Otherwise, it just wouldn't make sense to pay a third-string center that kind of money (or even just the average of his salaries). No matter how good he is, if Splitter and Duncan are still better, let someone else overpay for him (or better yet, trade or S&T him).

If Splitter gets re-signed this off-season, there's no reason to worry about Baynes playing enough minutes to warrant a big-money deal. If Splitter doesn't, and Baynes plays well enough to get an Asik-level deal, then I doubt he'd sign a poison-pill deal unless he wanted to leave the Spurs or if the Spurs had serious doubts about keeping him. It doesn't make sense for a player to take less money in year 1 and to turn down Bird raises.

Of course he would, because it would by definition be many million more than the Spurs would offer.

I do agree that he probably won't get enough minutes from Pop next year to warrant an Asik like deal, but we have opened the door if he is a free agent in 2014.

I think the Spurs would love for Baynes to become an Asik-like player within the next 18 months, even at the risk of losing him. It may help secure another le.

If he's good he deserves to get paid, lol at people expecting a player to sign a 4 years deal for the minimum.

Neal got ed over already by signing a three years deal for chump change.

If you're an NBA nobody, you really have no leverage. They both were.

That was fat Blair. Skinny blair couldn't do that . He isn't even an above-average rebounder anymore.

I think Mills just inked himself an extension with the signing of baynes. Wonder if he gets some kind of kick-back or commission off this deal?

Q: How many Aussies does it take to make an NBA rotation player?
A: 2. One to fill the FGA and AST categories, the other to fill in FGM and REB.

I doubt the Spurs throw him out there until he gets some practice time. I bet that home game vs Charlotte will be the first time we get a look at him. The Spurs have 3 full days off after the Phoenix game to practice.
