Baynes seeks to bring toughness, energy

He’ll have to wait until his visa clears to begin practicing, and learning the Spurs Way after that.
Looks like the visa is still being worked out...Hope we are not in for another Patty Mills saga here.

Spurs are the worst offensive rebounding team. While a reason of it is Spurs putting an emphasis on stopping fast breaks, it's also because of a lack of skills in that area. Baynes, who was the best offensive rebounder in Euroleague this season, could surely help Spurs to solve that weakness.

Really? Ahead of Dawkins, Dr. J, Dominique, Jordan, Vince Carter, etc?
I didn't say he had the best individual dunks, and certainly not the most famous dunks, which was my point. He had several per game in his prime.

    Dawkins lol

    Wonderful point.

This kid can only help bolster, what has been a woefully undersized and underskilled, Spurs frontline. I mean, once you get past Duncan and Splitter, the dropoff in both skill level and size is significant.

I cannot wait to see him play and hope he gets some run versus the Mavs. And I cannot wait until he develops and eventually moves up the food chain to become the 3rd or 4th big.

Yeah right, call me when Splitter gets as many Triple Double as Diaw got in his career and call me when he can shoot or pass as well as he does...

Diaw is a very odd player though, and comparing him with nearly any post player comes up with some interesting conclusions.

You have to take into account that Diaw was drafted by the Hawks with the intention of him playing guard next to Jason Terry. But he ended up just being a trainwreck instead. He was moved to Phoenix in the Joe Johnson trade and they played him at SF. It wasn't until Amare Stoudemire got hurt that the Suns got a wild hair and really played the guy in the post. He actually ended up playing the vast majority of the season as the Run n' Gun Sun's starting center, garnering the Most Improved Player award. After that hes been considered a combo-forward that has slumped more towards the PF position largely because of weight gains that have slowed him down.

As a result: his passing vision and playmaking abilities are incredibly advanced. His rebounding prowess is underdeveloped. He has the handles of a guard, because he is/was a guard, but has picked up post play later in life. Statistically hes a potential monster, as he can score (when he cares to shoot) fairly well, has excellent passing ability, and plays a position that often puts him in position to snag rebounds.

Hes a great player to have, and I'm a huge fan of the fact that we grabbed him up last season. But hes a very non-traditional post player.

some people here seem turned off by the mention of reggie evans. if this guy can become as good a defender and rebounder as evans, i'd be pretty glad. keep in mind reggie evans is 6'8 and can't jump over a phonebook

To a certain extent, yeah. Not to say that Robinson's dunks were just run of the mill though. It's more about perception outside of the city. Most of Robinson's really impressive dunks were never seen by anyone outside of San Antonio. I remember him dunking on the entire Indiana front line, I remember him facialing some of the best shot blockers in the league, and he was always good for a one handed alley oop on a fast break.

At the bottom of the interview, it lists Baynes' age as 27 with a birthdate of 9/12/86. I assume that's a misunderstanding of the order of the numbers (Day/Month/Year vs. Month/Day/Year) of his birthdate. Draftexpress has him as 26 years old with 12/09/86 as his birthdate. I assume that is correct. Anyone know for certain?

Everywhere in the world, except America it seems, reads birthdays DAY/MONTH/YEAR. For some reason the USA put it out of order and goes MONTH/DAY/YEAR. Regardless, 12/9/86 and 9.12.86 are the same date, point in fact.

And besides, if he was born December 1986 he'd be 26. But if he was born a whole 3 months earlier in September 1986, he'd still be 26. It's a moot point.

The fact that the article says hes 27 is obviously just a simple math error.

and call me when Diaw reaches 7 ft tall and can defend the likes of Marc Gasol. You clearly focused on only one part of my statement.

Baynes did a really good interview over the radio here this morning, It will probably end up online as the station who broadcast it does tend to put up their lead interviews made more interesting is one of the 3 guys speaking to him was Andrew Gaze so a bit of old school Spur talk as well.

Just a reminder, if anyone wants to watch full games of Baynes from this year's Adriatic League, click here and choose from rounds 1-16 of Union Olyimpija.

I thought to post this due to a popular Spurs site doing an article about the impressions of others but it seemed like the writer hadn't actually watched him for himself.
