he really is a poor man's tiago. just reminds me of tiago's game a season or 2 ago..

he seems very raw and quite serviceable. in fact, i bet he starts to click a little more each game. of course, with a few expected off games/hitting the wall. i just think he picks it up quick. he seems eager, capable, and intelligent.

Monster dunks and ridiculous turnovers...you want Baynes to be JaVaLe McGeE?

And the Wizards bigs are much better than those of the Bobcats. It's the wings that suck for Washington. (Not that the Bobcats wings are much better)
I call him Aussie JaVaLe McGee already.

Tiago was the acb finals mvp, the world's second best league. Baynes came from a team from Ucrania, Lithuania or something like that. He still can improve a lot, but will never reach the same level of skills of Tiago. He is a different kind of player, needs to learn how to use his toughness, not searching Tiago's finesse wich he will never reach.

Tiago was already talented at 14 years old, came from a family of four basketball players, three of them made the brazilian NT (older brother Marcelo and younger late sister Mic e). Tiago started to learning basket at pre-teen age and Baynes probably started late. Probably Tiago was more skilled at 14 than Baynes is nowadays; but baynes has something tiago never will have: natural toughness and strenght.

Should Baynes do really well for the remainder of the season, would he qualify to be a Rookie of the Year candidate?

This question is not intended to be my personal opinion of the mans skills, but more of an inquiry on the rules of the contest should a rookie comes into the league mid-season.

Thanks in advance for the answers.
Lol no. Damian Lillard from Portland has the ROY award pretty much locked up.

For 250 pounds, he's very light on his feet, and those tree trunk legs got some hop. And cool head, too.
I believe Baynes was about 285 in college and he's down to about 260ish. So he's faster on his feet for sure. Still a big dude though. A monstrous dunk in his first real NBA outing is pretty badass. He's very fortunate to be with an organizaton as supportive and welcoming as the Spurs! Welcome (what did Tony say they call him?) "Bansy!"

Tiago has a jumper, probably it's rusty or Pop doesn't allow him to do it. At least I read in ST that Tiago has a jumper. I knew he trained threes before he gone to Spain at 15.

In some practice videos I have seen tiago shoot jumpers in the background but someone explained that they are just to help Tiago with his range. But we need size around the rim there is no need for Tiago to shoot jumpers, that is why we got Tim.

Pop will have a talk with him about dunking the ball...thats a no no with the Spurs. And then he will look deep into his eyes and ask him if he has gotten over himself. And then right before the playoffs start he will come out and say these playoffs aren't for him.

If Tiago spend some minutes with Baynes on court probably he will use the jumpers.

Baynes isn't the most refined player and he is athletic, so let him dunk. Or he will be an offense liability. He doesn't seems to have good hands.

I doesn't matter...unless you seriously think he's going to beat out someone like Anthony Davis or Damian Lillard.

He definitely seems like a great addition to the team. We finally have two true centers and can at least match up with teams that go tall. I'm not saying that Baynes was the missing piece that will win it all, but I am saying that if he ends up being the real deal, the elite teams won't be able to snag all sorts of offensive rebounds like they have in recent years. I'm sure there were many a Spurfan that would scream bloody murder every time the opposing team would get two or three possessions because we couldn't bring down a contested rebound.

He's looked decent, as well as confused, so far. Playoffs? Who knows. He does, however, have the benefit of this being one of Timmy's last years that hopefully prompts Pop to forego his usual routine of letting newbs simmer in the pot before he unleashes them.

I don't think he will beat them. I am just curious as to whether or not he is eligible should something like this happen in the future with a different player beginning his rookie year mid-season.

I believe that player is eligible, but I don't forsee any rookie that only plays half a season winning it. There will always be a standout rookie that goes high in the draft and contributes for his team the whole year. Furthermore, if this player was good enough to be ROY, he would be playing somewhere on opening day and not joining up with a team halfway through the season.

I wonder what happened to Lorbek. He had similar size and an outside shot.

Some fanboys are soo delusional. Bane can't beat a effin Zeller as a rookie, tbh.

Was more interested in the rules on ROY eligibility than who would be the representative tbh.

Loved this quote that Baynes made in the article:

''I have two good agents who talked [to] the Spurs and luckily we were able to find a good fit for me. They are one of the best organisations and best teams; it was a pretty easy decision to come over here.''

As should be obvious, BANE!!! is a project. I'd say he'll be a useful bench big next year and beyond, but don't expect much more than garbage time from him this year as he has a huge amount of corporate knowledge to acquire before he knows where to be on the court in the Spurs' system. Good to see him sent to the Toros to speed this process.

Block out, rebound, no in bounds passes. There some finer points he'll need to learn, but if he can manage those three, he'll get playing time this season.
