I thought this was just a ghost story, would Stern actually suspend he guy who took the NBA to new heights for over two years for gambling? Assuming he was betting on NBA games, I can understand a suspension, but for two years during the height of MJ's popularity?

Do you guys believe MJ was actually suspended? I know his father dying probably affected him, but still.

Should be a 30 for 30 on this

I don't know the validity or believability of the rumors. But what I always gathered from them wasn't the fact that Michael was just gambling. It was the fact that his gambling was rumored to be related to his father's death. If it was just gambling, I think Stern and the NBA would have been more than willing to just keep that under wraps. But if Michael's dad was murdered because of gambling debts and that turned into an FBI investigation, then it makes more sense for Stern to encourage Michael to get away from the game for a while. And when things cleared up and no FBI investigation ended up coming about, he returned to the league. I don't know what to believe. But the rumors weren't just about gambling.

The official version of the story just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Meanwhile with the size of the stakes and egos of the players involved in that almost any colorful theory seems like it could be true.

If Sam Smith who's made a career out of ting on Jordan doesn't believe a negative theory about him then you know it's bunk

It was rumored that it was mafia related. Apparently, MJ was asked to drop a few games against the Suns. MJ being the GOAT that he was brushed the threat off his shoulder and averaged 40 freaking points per game in a Finals series. Rest is history.

Jordan was rumored to have paid the same mafia an unknown figure (9 figures probably) to get off his back. The mafia obliged but there was a small condition, its more of an insult really. They agreed to allow Michael to go back and play basketball again but he would have to wear a # 45 in his return. Oddly, its also the same caliber used to kill his father.

NBA players were very media-protected back in the day...even moreso the farther you go back. LA (and some national) writers knew that Magic lived life on the downlow but kept hush-hush about it. Same with Jordan's horrible gambling addiction (and his terrible self-serving personality).

Tbh, I've always thought Jordan got in so deep gambling-wise that not only did his dad got got, but that whatever he did would have blown Pete Rose's story out of the water. So, David Stern either could suspend him for life or suspend him for a couple seasons on the downlow (no Magic) and selected the route that wouldn't have murdered the NBA as a league. If Stern suspends Jordan for life for gambling, we'd probably be watching tape delayed telecasts, to be frank.

It is kinda sketchy that to this day nobody has any earthly idea what really happened to him. Robert Stack would get to the bottom of this if he was still here

stern wouldn't have suspended him even if he got tested positive for game enhancing drugs tbh. OP must also think magic got suspended for life because he got caught whoring

This is the most plausible explanation I've seen on this situation with MJ. It's 100% believable in my book.

It's funny, because the all-time leader in hits (Pete Rose) is being held out of MLB HOF for the same type reasons. I guess MLB has more integrity than NBA, BSPN, etc.

It's fine to go along with the popular theory that he was secretly suspended for gambling, but to attach his dad's murder to it is really one of the most unfounded and irresponsible things you've ever written LJ. There just isn't a shred of evidence to support it at all and all available evidence completely points against it. That's a crazier and more immature thing to claim than Bush and the GOP were behind 9/11 tbh.

My question is - is Jordan so addicted to money that he wouldn't pay his debts (when he easily had the money) knowing his dad would get murked because of it.

"Jordan, we have your father. If you don't pay up.."

    click...

"Mike? Mike? You there? The son of a b*tch actually hung up."

The MLB's integrity, like the NCAA's integrity, is sanctimonious. When the Roger Maris record that had stood for decades got broken several times over a few seasons, or when the likes of Brady Anderson was having 50+ home run seasons, do you really think the MLB was so naive that it didn't realize what was going on? Of course not, but it was bringing in tons of money and making baseball more popular than ever so they turned a blind eye to steroids.

Keeping Pete Rose out of the HOF is also stupid. Gambling for/against your team isn't performance enhancing and isn't why Pete Rose was good. If being a s bag is something that keeps you out of the HOF, then Ty Cobb shouldn't be in the HOF either.

Pure, uncut goods. I agree 100%. It's a shame though because Rose will eventually get in - post humanously though - which is foul. The man was a of a baseball player.
