HOUSTON — If you watched the All-Star game, you gained an appreciation for Kobe Bryant’s defensive determination. If you stood 3 feet away from him and spoke to him afterward, as I did, you gained a clearer understanding of where he stands on the whole question of what the Lakers should do with Dwight Howard.

And if you read a little into his quotes, you get the feeling that Bryant wouldn’t be surprised in the least, or even bothered, if the Lakers decide to trade the big man before the deadline Thursday afternoon.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do. At this point, it doesn’t matter,” Bryant said after putting on a signature defensive performance against LeBron James in the West’s 143-138 victory over the East Sunday night in the 2013 NBA All-Star game.

“What matters to us is what we do on Wednesday, and go from there. That’s the most important thing, and that’s my message to the team. We can’t worry about the future, we can’t worry about the past. We have to focus on the present,” Bryant said.

“Honestly I really don’t know what the heck is going on with that. and I can’t afford to. It’s a fine line for a player like myself to get involved in that situation, because now you become distracted of what exactly you need to do as a leader with the team you have assembled,” Bryant said. “So instead of wasting my energy thinking about what they might do or what might happen, I have to focus on the pieces that we have and how to reach every single one of them individually to bring out the best in them. If I don’t obsess about that, we can’t get nowhere.”

He doesn't sound like this with the Pau trade talk. Dwight = fcked

He really wants Pau to retire in LA, as much as Lakers fans hate him already.

While the Lakers have a legit commercial interest in keeping Kobe, true to be said, his chucking is the reason the Lakers will miss the playoffs.

Not his inability to improve his assist-turnover ratio despite increasing his raw assist numbers?

It was a matter of time the opposite coaches where going to make adjustments. Not saying he's the best Lakers option to run the offense, but its clear the Lakers saw an improvement when Kobe started distributing the ball.

Mostly because guys like Dwight, Clark, and even Nash started hitting shots. IIRC he was always turnover prone this season.

Nash is 50-40-90 shooter, Dwight led the league in fg% in the past and is an all-star player. There was no reason for Kobe to make 25 fga, around 15 should be fine and get Nash, Dwight, Gasol, Artest and Jamison involved. Also Nash should set the plays, in the time he's on the court.

Number of games missed for Kobe: 0
Number of games missed for Howard/Gasol/Nash: 48

As usual, Kobe gets too much credit from fans when things go well, and too much criticism from haters when they don't. While I'll always appreciate Pau for beasting in the two champinship runs, he was terrible this year when he played.

if he's determined to leave LA, the lakers better trade him RIGHT NOW even at a discount of his true value. they're losing him anyway and the longer they keep an unhappy DH in LA, the more his value is gonna shrink. so that even if they convince him to re-sign in the summer and deal his ass out, they're not guaranteed to get more from the team that what they can get right now.

Then who's to be blamed for missing the playoffs?

    5 Steve Blake G 6-3 172 02/26/1980
    24 Kobe Bryant G 6-6 205 08/23/1978
    6 Earl Clark F 6-10 225 01/17/1988
    21 Chris Duhon G 6-1 190 08/31/1982
    3 Devin Ebanks F 6-9 215 10/28/1989
    16 Pau Gasol F-C 7-0 250 07/06/1980
    27 Jordan Hill C 6-10 235 07/27/1987
    12 Dwight Howard C 6-11 265 12/08/1985
    4 Antawn Jamison F 6-9 235 06/12/1976
    20 Jodie Meeks G 6-4 208 08/21/1987
    1 Darius Morris G 6-4 190 01/03/1991
    10 Steve Nash G 6-3 178 02/07/1974
    50 Robert Sacre C 7-0 260 06/06/1989
    15 Metta World Peace F 6-7 260 11/13/1979

Nash has Blake and Duhon as his backups, its not bad.
The bigman rotation of Pau - Howard - Hill - Jamison - Clark is solid, they need 3 of them healthy.
In terms of talent, only the Heat could compare.

Kirby, this past summer: "The Lakers are still my team"

Therefore, if/when they miss the playoffs, he deserves all the blame since it's "his" team...
