Immigrants need to assimilate and willingly identify more with their new country than their old. A country that experiences a mass of immigrants who refuse to assimilate will always run the risk of fragmenting, with each specific race/culture living in isolation. This is why multiculturalism has precipitated the downfall of many empires. It's a fine ideal, but historically, it's never worked, because it ultimately weakens a country's unity.
No one is suggesting immigrants suppress all elements of their native culture. America has greatly benefited from immigrant influences in pretty much every cultural area you can think of. But where immigrants once desired to merge their native culture with the host, they now want to supplant the host culture with their own, or seclude themselves off.

The students in the honors program (whites) and the students in the dumb program (mexicans) had a few classes together as fresmen and we interacted some. Fortunately most of them dropped out the day they turned 16 so we only had to deal with them for 2 years or so.
