The Rockets deadline trades will cost them a playoff spot. They gave up productive players for a turd like Thomas Robinson. Heck, they have a more talented Terrence Jones on the bench who has way more game and upside than Robinson.

The Rockets will not drop out of the playoffs, and you have clearly not heard of Donatas Motiejunas. Good day sir.

Soft jumpshooting Euro. Yeah he's still raw. He has upside just like Jones. But Robinson still sucks. He's older than both and less skilled.

With Utah choking against Milwaukee, congrats on Houston getting to #7, even if it is temporary. But living in LA, the main story that came from the Utah loss is the Lakers playoff chances.

In my eyes, the Lakers are still a longshot to make the playoffs. Assuming OKC beats LA on Tuesday, if the Jazz can beat the Cavs and the Rox beat the Mavs (all 3 quite likely), it would put LA at 30-31, Houston at 34-28, and Utah at 33-28.

Now, most fans Laker fans are conceding that Houston will hang on to a playoff spot but Utah will drop out. Well, Utah has already clinched the tiebreak against LA (2-1, no 4th game this year), so from then to the end of the season the Lakers would have to gain FOUR games on Utah in the loss column in what is a 21 game span for both teams. So even assuming the Lakers maintain their recent momentum and continue to play .700 ball or so (assume they go 15-6 over the last 21, despite having 11 road games in that stretch, giving them a record of 45-37), all Utah would have to do over their final 21 games is to go 12-9, and they'd be ahead of LA in the standings.

The Lakers actually have a better shot at getting by Houston, as they still have 1 game left against the Rox who currently are ahead in the season series 2-1. The Lakers actually currently have the better conference record. If they are able to beat Houston in the last game of the season, they'd presumably have the tiebreaker. It's also noteworthy that this final game is in LA. So in this more likely scenario, if the Lakers are indeed to remain hot and win 15 of their last 21 games (including the Rockets game), if the rockets go 11-9 during that stretch, the Lakers would squeak in.

Or lastly, Golden State has 27 losses, and on Wednesday they play Sacto at home. Assuming a win, they'd be 35-27. The Lakers are currently up 2-0 in the season series with 2 games to go. Once again, if we assume the Lakers go 15-6 to close the season (and assuming they take at least 1 of those GS matchups to clinch the tiebreaker), Golden State would have to finish 11-9 to keep the Lakers out.

Long story short, even in the Lakers maintain their current hot pace for the duration of the season, Utah, Houston, and Golden State have to be marginally better than .500 the rest of the way to secure a playoff spot. That said, with games remaining against Chicago, Indiana, Memphis, San Antonio, Atlana, and the Clippers, I'm not sure the Lakers will have a record quite that strong the rest of the way. Kobe is currently putting the team on his back and willing them to wins, but thats not exactly a sustainable way to win games. It took a monster effort from him to beat Atlanta by 1 at home, as well as late game heroics to hold off Dallas and Portland. I do think the Lakers are playing better, but not as good as their record in this stretch of games would make you think.

Now if some funny business happens in the OKC game, Utah-Cleveland game, Houston-Mavs game, and Golden State - Sacto game.... it would up my math and the credibility of the entire post

Tie breakers be damned, the Lakers still have a much better shot at getting past Utah (who is playing like crap) than Houston.

    Short story, short.
