Phil Jackson has become a trusted mentor to Dwight Howard.
"Phil, he texts me and he understands how it is to come off back surgery," Howard said. "He just said it takes a full year to recover, so you can't beat yourself up over the things that have happened this year."
Jackson recently told Sports Illustrated that Mike D'Antoni's system doesn't suit Howard's talents.
"Dwight just doesn't get any touches," Jackson said. "They've basically eliminated his assets."

Even after his little vacation I don't know if I buy that Phil's really interested to returning to the full time grind of headcoaching. I could almost learn to like him if this all turns out to be a soap-worthy masterplan for revenge to over Jim Buss for how things went down in the fall. He's clearly already got Dwight's ear. Use that to force D'Antoni out and see if he can twist Jim or Mitch's arm until they amnesty Kobe under the threat that Dwight won't resign otherwise. As soon as the ink's dry on their walking papers retire again. Maybe add some proper soap opera flair to the whole thing and fake his own death and live out his golden years under an assumed name on a tropical island, occasionally sending Jim a Christmas card containing a photo of of him defiling Jeannie.
