Very ugly loss. The Spurs have a bull's eye on their back, and obviously they're not good enough (though tbh, the Jordan Bulls is the gold standard here, so perspective) to always raise their game to meet that level, when a marginal (but still NBA-level) team really comes to play. Detroit, GS, Phoenix, and now Portland, all ultimately irrelevant teams that have come to play and beat the Spurs this season.
Tonight, for me, was mainly another example of Pop being more of an aesthete than an experimenter. Even though Bonner and Blair were killing us with their porous defense, he preferred to go with them instead of Baynes, just because they "know the system," so Baynes has more potential to be "ugly" out there. Well, plenty of other coaches throw inexperienced players out there, even though there's the potential for ugly miscues. I just wish Pop wasn't always so conservative. There was a whole half there, where it seems rather apparent that the Blazers were just going to hit every shot they took, why not throw Baynes out there just to see what he could provide against some top compe ion in Aldridge and Hickson? Rhetorical question of course.
It's just, when their bigs are going off, why not try him out? If he can step up a little and just provide a bit more on D than Blair/Bonner, maybe Green et al don't have to provide as much help, and so are able to better stay on their man (= on of the dozen [?] 3 pt shooters that were killing us). Since the Blazers built their massive lead on 3 pt makes, seems like that could have helped.
But whadda I know.......
