It's all about matchups, depending on what the opposing guards can do. That and foul trouble. however, if Pop needs a defender, he could go with guard sets like Parker/Cory. Or Manu/CJ (if TP needs rest). This is CJ's time to tell Pop he can handle it. It's his possible "Neal" moment, taking away minutes that Neal probably would play (the majority of the time).

To me Neal is somewhat like Bonner. He bails us out by hitting shots when our defense isn't good enough. We need our defense to be good enough to not need Neal in the rotation.
what's infuriating about Neal/Mills/Bonner is that they are for the most part utterly useless with their 3 ball doesn't fall. Neal has his moments where he attacks and hits floaters. Bonner has his moments were he actually competes on D. Mills is always pushing tempo. But realistically speaking, they are hurting the team if they aren't shooting great. Manu for example, can do all sorts of things if his 3's aren't falling. Awesome on D, great pick and roll game, etc. Green can be an absolute pest on D.
Guys like CoJo and De Colo can still be effective on without being on fire from long range. Nando can still create pretty well and runs the show. His defense is hit or miss. CoJo is a good Vaughn-esque offensively player with what looks to be better shooting/scoring ability. His D has potential to be nasty. This is why i've been much more in favor of Nando running the backup gig (prior to CoJo's callup)
If Neal or Mills is out there I think Manu on the floor is a must tbh.
Along with solid defenders at the guards/wings.
In some ways. For me, he's more of a situational guy like that or Kerr. But then he has massive problems against teams like OKC/Clippers which really hurts. Bonner's D actually isn't too bad. I feel like when Neal struggles, he just makes it worse by trying too hard at times.

It's gotta be between Cory and Neal for the backup spot. I really have no idea who Pop will go with. Neal still has value if he is on his game.
Mills' defense in that Portland game was horrible and some of his lapses occurred at times when Portland went on big runs. He's a very streaky shooter too, and his streaks hardly ever seem to go on when the game is on the line. I've lost confidence in Mills, he's going to have to play much better for me to regain it in him. His PG skills suck, his handles are average too. I'm very surprised if the Spurs envision him as the backup PG of the future like another poster mentioned a week or two ago.
Neal is streaky too, but he can hit when the game in on the line as he has proved it time and time again.
Why does Cory get so few minutes? 20 minutes is what he seems to be averaging since he has been starting. I don't get it. Tonight I understand it, but the last few games he should have gotten a lot more court time.
Good defense + Zero TO = Primary back-up to TP.
The way Pop talks about him makes me think he's the favorite for the job right now. In the post-game press conference, he called Joseph, "solid." I think "solid" is what he's been looking for from his backup point for the entire season.

I liked how Joseph handled himself against OKC. Very solid game, great defense and smart plays. Kept his head and playing against Westbrook like he was in his element.
Hoping that he gets the job and allow Neal to come off and hit shots when Manu is off his game.

I saw CJ defend a Barea drive and reject him at the rim.
I don't think CJ gets the worse end on defense very often, but he needs to work in that offense.
I saw him get caught ball-watching and sagging off Barea a couple times, but his on-ball defense was solid. It was probably his first sub-par outing, but no other player stole the spotlight.
It's still his to lose I think, but it's a low bar tbh.
If Cory Joseph starts a game and scores in double digits, the Spurs lose big.
Yeah because a game without Duncan and Kawhi in it won't mean a significant drop in defense (in this case) and offense on a brutal b2b.bump
