One of the most controversial parts of the new recruiting deregulations apparently will not be struck down. Especially when Texas has dipped into the Alabama staff pool to start its own player personnel department.

Former Bama assistant director/football operations Patrick Suddes was introduced Friday as Texas' first director of player personnel. Schools are allowed to have such departments under the new deregulations that are expected to go into effect on Aug. 1. There is concern about a new arms race in recruiting, but it seemingly isn't going to stop with player personnel.

Suddes, 30, came from a pool of 100 applicants and was a finalist along with LSU director of player personnel Morris Sherman. Those two schools are considered the gold standard in the so-called “quality control” positions. Not coaches, they are the extra polo shirts on those staffs considered valuable valets for the staffers. Some are paid, some are volunteers. Some of it is grunt work. The upside is that they can have a major-college power on their resume.

For example, there are five persons listed on the Alabama staff as “Football Analyst.”

Suddes has followed Alabama coach Nick Saban since becoming a recruiting intern at LSU in 2004. He will coordinate all camps and the Texas high school coaches clinic. A player personnel department could conceivably do that and more -- break down recruiting tape for assistants, for example. And/or keep a running Twitter/text dialogue with recruits.

“If I'm recruiting 30 juniors and 15 sop res, I can spend all my time texting and doing nothing else,” Brown said.

Which is now what he wants to do. Texas is looking to have a player personnel staff of about five.

"I'm not married. I have no hobbies, other than bad basketball,” said Suddes, who has spent the last six seasons at Bama, his alma mater. “I've got nothing to do but make this right."

The NCAA's Rules Working Group is asking the NCAA board to look at a couple of the new proposed rule changes. Neither of them have to do with schools being able to establish player personnel departments.

Brown, current president of the American Football Coaches Association, is critical of some of the recruiting changes but went to the top to get his first player personnel director. Brown added that he is against staffs getting so big “that Wake Forest and East Carolina can't afford everything.”

“I do want our rules to get better,” he said. “They have been antiquated for so long. With all this shake up, as confusing as it is, it's going to get some clarity. We're going to come out of this in a better place, I think.”

Sounds like Patrick Suddes got a pretty sweet gig.

Also from 24/7, 2015 S Deionte Thompson (committed to Alabama) of West Orange-Stark will be in Austin for the spring game on March 30th. I'm assuming he will receive an offer while on campus.

Quotes from 2015 OL Aaron Garza of Sherman after receiving his invite to Sop re Day (24/7):

“I’ve always been a Longhorn fan and always will be, so I’m really pumped about the visit there,” Garza said. “I’m definitely looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to checking out the new weight room and seeing the campus.”

“So far I have scholarship offers from Michigan and Baylor,” he explained. “My top five is Texas, Alabama, Baylor, Oregon and then Texas A&M."

“If [Texas] offered me a full ride though, I would accept is as soon as possible. My interest for those other colleges would go away immediately,” Garza added.

Update on 2015 S Deionte Thompson of West Orange-Stark (24/7):

“Coach (Bo) Davis called my dad and talked to him today,” Thompson told Hookem.com on Friday. “They invited me down the weekend of the Texas Relays I think, on the 30th of this month.”

“Texas was always an interest to me, so I want to check them out,” he explained. “But as of right now, my commitment to Alabama is strong.”

“First, Austin is a great city,” Thompson said. “I have relatives in the area and it’s close to home. My dad is also a Longhorn fan. I want to check them out more, because I really don’t know what defensive scheme they run. I want to find out more about them.”

“I’m not real sure what they (Texas) would have to do (to get me to de-commit from Alabama),” said Thompson. “The chance to play for Coach Saban is huge for me. I like that he works with the DBs too. That’s a plus. I like their defensive scheme and the way they run it fits the way I play. I enjoyed the city and campus life there, too. I just had a great overall experience there.”

    “It’s early,”
he said. “So time will tell.”

LB Cameron Hampton discusses his Texas commitment (24/7):

“It just kind of happened,” Hampton said. “Coach Brown made me feel right at home and so did Coach [Bruce] Chambers and Coach [Manny] Diaz. I just got a good feeling for Texas.”

“Me and my family had a discussion while we were down there,” Hampton said. “Everybody was comfortable with it, so I went ahead and did it.”

“I just felt at home,” Hampton said. “At the end of the day everybody supporting me would be able to see me play.”

“Basically they're the coaches who have been on me the most,” Hampton said. “It just felt right.”

“They said if I leave or if something happens that I can come back and get my degree,” Hampton said. “The fact that no matter what happens I'll have a chance to get my degree is big.”

“It's an honor because not everybody from here has a chance to go to UT,” Hampton said. “I'm just ready to go on and be a leader and play my role.”

“We've all (Texas commitments) been welcoming each other,” Hampton said. “We've gotten each others numbers and we've been communicating quite a bit.”

Kind of epitomizes what UT football has been about since the '09 season. Very few guys can man-up, go one-on-one and get the job done; specifically in the Cotton Bowl against OU. Safe bet that it won't be the last issue Texas has before the season starts.

Update on OL Jovan Pruitt of Dallas Bishop Dunne (OrangeBloods):

"The second (UT) junior day, I made a bad decision. I was down in College Station. I got a tour of their academic facilities and everything,"
Pruitt said. "I should have been at UT. I'll probably make it to a spring practice soon and make it to some of their games when they play at Austin."

"I'm very interested in getting down there, to be able to talk to the coaches again,"
Pruitt said. "I don't know. They may be a little mad at me since I didn't make the junior day, but I'm going to go down there during spring ball, see how they're going to fare for next year in football."

"Mostly, I like their legacy. I like the way coach Brown really sets everything up down there, how their structure is,"
Pruitt said. "You see the players, what they're going through right now, it sets them up to succeed. That's what I like there."
"When I get into the climax of my senior year is when I'll do that. I've got some schools that I really like, but none that I'm considering one is better, one I feel at home yet, one I want to go to,"
Pruitt said. "I want to go to the places, see in person what they have, know what they have to offer. I need to see what all is it going to take for me to fit into their program before I make any decisions."

    J. Hokanson reporting that Lamar S John Bonney and his family drove 700 miles to visit Auburn and spent Friday checking out the campus and visiting coaches. Had a lot of nice things to say ("Auburn is definitely high on my list") and his parents seemed to really like the campus. He left saying he was unsure whether he would visit again before his summer decision.

Tigers are recruiting him as a dual position player, either corner or safety. Said he doesn't have leaders but that he and his dad will work to narrow the list by summertime

CB Jermaine Roberts of New Orleans, LA names Texas his leader. He and his St. Augustine teammates will be visiting Alabama today or tomorrow (24/7):

“I would say that right now Texas is recruiting me the hardest,” said Roberts. “It would probably be them and Texas A&M that are recruiting me harder than anyone else at this point.”

“I have a top three right now and they are both in it,” Roberts explained. “Texas is on top at number one, then Texas A&M at two and then it’s Alabama as my third choice. All three of those schools are doing a good job of recruiting me, but Texas is on top.”

“The relationship that I have with the coaches at Texas is the main reason they stand out to me above Texas A&M and Alabama,” he told Hookem.com. “Especially with Coach Porter. We have a great relationship. We talk often. We talk every week actually. So I’m really looking forward to getting to hang out with him and the rest of the Texas coaches when I come down there for my visit.”

“I will be coming down there for the Texas Relays,” Roberts said. “I’m participating in it, so I’ll be doing that plus taking another visit to the Texas campus. I’m pretty excited about it all. I’m going to get with my position coach and see what all he would like for me to see and do while on the visit, especially since I have already been once and seen some things. It’s going to be good though. I’m looking forward to seeing Texas again.”
