I have never been impressed by Patty Mills, tbh..
He's a SG in a 6-footer's body..
Why does POP wait till the end of the game to play Patty? He's fast, can score. He needs to be given more of CoJo minutes. At the end of last year he was given starting position and really shined in place of Parker.

i heard there were 2 sides to the floor...
Hit-or-miss player.
Unfortunately, he's been more bad than good this year. He can't play defense. His offense hasn't been that good either. We already have Gary Neal, tbh.
I know Neal has been hurt, but defensively between those two it's a wash, tbh... On nights where Gary isn't doing well, I wouldn't have a problem with Patty shouldering some minutes when you want some long shooting...
Cojo>Mills.
Mills is far too out of control on offense and defense, the Spurs have plenty of offense. What SA needs is defense, some playmaking and a guy that won't mess anything up, Cojo fills the role perfectly. Mills should only be used when the Spurs have nothing working and need a spark off the bench.
Trollolololol.
Patty Cakes was pathetic tonight, tbh, though maybe you are just trolling?
Mills has never been terrible offensively. It's his defense that makes it hard for Pop to give him the backup spot. Patty's unable to fight through screens and sags way too much, therefore leaving shooters wide open.
His shooting's always been there, he's the fastest point guard on the team in terms of end-to-end sprinting and his ability to run the pick and roll with some of our bigs has vastly improved from last season.
If he can get his defense up to par, then I don't see why he shouldn't get that backup spot. Mills is basically a faster version of Gary Neal with slightly better handles too.
Patty also led the Spurs tonight in assists with 6. You can see that his passing's improved a lot from last season.

Patty Mills > Gary Neal... Neal gets caught playing horrible defense out of position and watching the play or wanders into the paint for who knows what reason. They both are streaky shooters but patty doesn't pick up his dribble or turn his back to the basket and dribble off his foot repeatably.
Patty can take the crown from Nate Robinson as the new king of garbage time
Baynes will probably be the next Anthony Randolph
Alright, I am pretty much done with Mills. He's had good chances and hasn't shown any kind of improvement whatsoever.
He's not good enough to be on this team.
"His shooting's always been there" His shooting has always been there is like saying Matt Bonner's shooting has always been there. Patrick is quickly becoming the new Bonner. He is a lights out shooter when there is no pressure on, but when the game is up for grabs, he's a worse shooter than Bonner. Mills will miss any wide open shot he gets. At least Bonner can make wide, wide open shots throughout most of the game. Bonner doesn't normally have problems making wide open shots in the meat of the game. It's just any kind of pressure situation where Bonner struggles. Mills seems to be a garbage time specialist. I don't know if he's worried about playing defense and is letting that affect him on the offensive end, but yeah, he's really, really bad.
He's also very poor defensively, wouldn't want him anywhere near the court in the playoffs.
Neal is a much better shooter, and I would take him any day of the week over Mills if I need someone to come in and hit a few shots for us. That is coming from someone who doesn't want Gary anywhere near the backup PG slot, but I will take a healthy Neal over Mills any time.
If Neal can't go in the playoffs I'd rather Nando or Cory get the court time.
Patty is a 3rd string and backup in case of injury. IMO backup PG is between decolo, cojo adn if they don't deliver. we'll roll with neal and old manu
Agreed.
Mills shouldn't be on the team. 3rd string is too high. I simply would not be able to play him 1 playoff minute. If we had people in foul trouble, I still wouldn't even play Mills. I'd rather play Kawhi at PG.
3rd string still has its uses. in case of foul trouble/need a few quick baskets, he can heat up real quick. or in case of leading in a blowout he can be used.
unfortunately we have the usual chicken little response to play analysis, that is a very short term, context-less view or simply a sad cry for attention from the trolls. Patty can provide quality spark and offense. I can understand fully his sagging off on a pick as the help coverage in SA is almost universally poor. Indeed diaw/blair/bonner are almost comically bad. Yes he is more offensively focused, but then that has always been his role. No player can develop without playing time and that has been all over the place. His role will depend upon the opposition as will all second string players on any team.
Eh, I could see him maybe providing a spark from downtown when we need it for a short period of time. Perhaps Steve Kerr-esque from 2003?
Probably not, though, but I don't think he's useless.
Does Neal possess Patty's speed? Neal's just as bad, if not worse, as Mills on defense and is prone to taking questionable shots.
You seem to have a selective memory. You remember all of Patty's performances from his bad games and use them as arguments for why he shouldn't be on the team, and ignore all of the games in which Patty had played a huge role in getting us the W. If the same type of logic was used for Manu and Jack, then they'd be the most hated players on the team.
Keep in mind that this is Mills' second year with the team..As with every other player, the more playing time he gets, the more improvements he will make in his game. Pop needs to pick a backup pg and stick to developing him, whether it be cojo, de colo, Mills or even Neal.
Sent from mobile.
He has zero awareness on defense. Youre supposed to sneak and help and then come back out if you can't get anywhere. He doesn't have size or length to make much of a difference coming in from the perimeter anyway. He sags and stays giving a wide open 3. What's sad is he does it over and over and over and over again.
I mean I don't think he's as reliable as Kerr but I do think they should have the same role. Same with Bonner tbh. If things have been going really poorly and offense is completely stagnant, we should throw in Mills to see if he can hit a shot or two to get things going. Bonner should only be out there if we are getting very turnover prone due to spacing issues. However, when Boris hits a 3, it pretty much makes Bonner totally useless as Diaw is better than Bonner in just about every other category
Rubbish, in international ball he is a press up defender - but then he has quality help on a pick and the game is tighter with greater use of the break. What you see with all of the spurs guards is a tendency to back up a bit, but the second unit bigs play the PnR badly and you need to have faith in the help. Today, with a team shooting amazingly well from beyond the arc it showed up the guard sag badly...BTW size and length...how did JJ Barea do today?

Patty is a shooting guard who can score but can't defend or run the offense. He's basically Gary Neal with less Garynealness.
He is good at pressing. Not so good at handling screens. He is a terrible off the ball defender. He loses his man consistently . It's why he gives up so many 3's.
