Olé Argentina says Ginobili could sign a three year deal
    By J. Gomez (Edg5) on Mar 21 2013, 12:44p

This is an excerpt from a story published by Argentine sports paper Ole about Manu Ginobili (here's the link to the original in Spanish):

    Manu 2016

At 35 (Ginobili) understands the game better than ever and he still dunks, from time to time, but he knows the end of his career is nearing.

"I want to play two more years, minimum," Ginobili said when asked about his future. His contract expires after this season and then it's time to start the negotiations. He's the highest paid Spur this season, with Parker ranking second and Duncan in a surprising fourth place after Stephen Jackson. How much could Ginobili get in the open market as a free agent? The Spurs' front office doesn't even want to think about that and is trying to get ahead of the game by planning to offer a three year deal. It looks like number 20 will wear Silver and Black until 2016...

Now, first of all it's important to mention that there is no source credited with the information so you should take it with a grain of salt. Ole is also better known for their soccer coverage, with basketball being almost an afterthought. That being said, Ole usually has connections with inside sources, including managers and a lot of times the players themselves and the language the writer uses seems to suggest that he does have a source in this particular case.

The biggest cause for skepticism would be that a three year contract wouldn't coincide with Tony Parker and Tim Duncan's deals, which expire in 2015. Parker's contract is only partially guaranteed that year and Duncan has a player option. Unless something catastrophic happens, the Spurs will likely keep Parker and if the team is contending, Duncan will likely pick up his player option, too. In that case, offering Ginobili a three year deal with only two years fully guaranteed would make sense, as he could be released in 2016 if the team wants to rebuild.

If new information surfaces, we'll keep you posted.

A 3 year deal would be great, as I'm sure the price will be right. Expect to see Ginobili continue the transition into a role more heavily focused on setting his teammates up than carrying the offense himself, as Kawhi takes over that role. No reason to think Manu wouldn't still be worth a smaller paycheck playing a smaller role.

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even finish another season after this one.

2 year + 1 fully unguaranteed as an asset to trade?

Tbh the way he has played this year he should be getting an MLE level deal. Any more would be a a career 'thank you' bonus, and it's tough to argue he doesn't deserve it.

I could see a decreasing contract with a partial guarantee on the 3rd year, a golden parachute like McDyess got. The Spurs will only need cap space if they can manage to resign Manu and Jackson for cheap and have enough room to beat the MLE before resigning Splitter.

Third-year would probably be player option I'd guess.

If it's a choice between a decent free agent (Millsap, Jefferson, West) or Jackson, I choose the free agent. We can always offer Jackson the room exception ($5m/2yr) after signing a free agent if we want to keep him.

Is it worth giving Manu a partially guaranteed 3rd year to get him to sign a with a lower starting salary this year? Could be a smart move. Giving him 5/5.5/2 instead of 6/6.5 would save us a bit of money this summer at the expense of a couple million in 2015. If it's the difference between a a decent free agent or not, it could be worth doing.

2 yrs for 10mln + 3mln guaranteed in year 3. Basiclly that makes 13/2, which is fair price.

And the Spurs want him to stay, although it's probably more accurate to say that money won't be an obstacle. I expect an agreement very early on that will give the Spurs the certainty they need to make other financial decisions this summer.

The Spurs don't dilly dally around when it comes to resigning players, they make an offer and its usually compe ive and fair. He'll probably get the 3 year deal which is okay because we'll be able to space out that cash. Wonder what its going to cost to keep Splitter

Should Manu get more than Splitter at this point in their careers?

And I wonder if we'll even tender an offer to Jax. He's having a poor season, but I'd hate to lose him.

I think Splitter has started the conversation on what his price tag will but but ultimately what he does in the playoffs will be his reward. If he is able to show the same kind of shot selection and post play as he has done in the second half of the season he'll get paid. I think the Spurs will offer Jax something because of loyalty and he's a vet and at the same time I think jax will have a realistic price tag so he should be staying.

give him the MLE for 2 years and some guaranteed money on the third year. anything more would be a bad decision. if you think ginobili in his early 30s was injury prone, ginobili in his late 30s will be even worse. he needs to move to a support role.

No, and Splitter will get paid this summer. Spurs aren't locking him up again for $3m a season.

No and he won't. Last off season and earlier this season, I was thinking that would be the case, but it's just not realistic at this point. He's probably going to get $7M and Splitter is probably going to $9M (I realize that he can beat that in the open market, but I still maintain that he won't max out and that they won't pay him more than Duncan).

I think it all comes down to the playoffs for Jackson. Personally, unless he goes absolutely nuts during the playoffs, I'd move on. Yeah, his swagger/toughness is nice, but you don't give someone 20 mpg unless they supplement that with at least decent production and he hasn't provided that.

$7m is more than Ginobili is worth playing wise IMO. He has struggled with injury this year and hasn't really performed when he's been on the court.

No doubt he deserves it for his loyalty though. If he gets $7m I won't be mad.
