the Giants tbh.
Exactly. When San Francisco Giants fans started that chant toward Los Angeles' greatest sports franchise, it sure as wasn't about respect. Giants fans despise the Dodgers, and the chant's intention is to disrespect everything about Los Angeles, whether it's the city's vapid culture (who Northern Californians feel they're above) or sports teams.
the Giants tbh.
Thin line between love and hate and all that stems from jealousy ...
LOL Dodgers gretest franchise in LA, Mid you cant even believe that .
Well in the chicano community maybe they have more latino fans than the Lakers do ...
But I support all LA teams outside os U$C so have your fun ...
And not that Spur fans would know about being the team fans love to hate ....
I'd be willing to bet most people don't hate the Lakers as a organization. The hate stems from their dumbass bandwagon fans who have little to no knowledge of basketball at all. And in the NBA, Lakerfans have the edge in bandwagon fans and it isn't even close.
If the Lakers miss the playoffs this year then this season will single handily destroyed Kobe's legacy. With one of the greatest teams ever assembled, he ended up missing the playoffs. He will rank right behind guys like Pistol Pete in the top 30 list.
Now who's being dense, killa?
The reason people chant beat [insert team name here] its because either a, they are hated or b, overachieving, y team with players you dont give a for. It has little to do with respect.
These people chant beat LA because of many reasons, yes they cheer against them because they're highly successful. That's a big part of it no doubt but they also do it because of the favoritism the league shows them.
And same thing will happen when Kobe leaves, none will care about who beats LA. Kobe is the main reason why Lakers gets both lambasted and is beloved at certain arenas by the fans.
i've been thinking the same thing, though I figured that season with Payton, Malone killed off his top 10 potential right there, followed by 3 years of his team getting curbstomped. But this season could dwarf them all if they fail to make the playoffs.
pretty much. I don't remember Showtime Lakers drawing this much hatred or the Lakers of the mid to late 90s. Must of the hate is because of Kobe and the Lakers' preferential treatment. I don't remember MJ getting nearly as much hate either, but then his greatness was never as questionable.
That season was forgivable because it was Shaq's team. Also, Malone, Fisher, Rick Fox, and Horace Grant magically had solid injuries after game 7 against Minny going into the finals.
AT the very least, Shaq helped take an old team with no bench to the finals and despite Kobe's rape case and Malone missing most of the season, they managed to take that team to the finals.
This year is different, granted Kobe is much older and individually looks good. As a leader, he got completely exposed. The season was over when he completely went out of his ing way to say," Oh btw for those of you wondering, this is my team." Check and mate right there, even some of the die hard Laker fans were shaking their head at Kobe starting for no reason. As scheduled, Dwight and Kobe dont like eachother.
Andrew Bogut on Kobe (back in 2009)
"There's no one I really hate, but Kobe [Bryant] had a demeanor of being very y," Bogut said. "What happened with Shaq. . . . If I had a chance to play with Shaq or Tim, if they told me to buy them groceries, I don't care, I buy them groceries. It's a gift to play with somebody like that. Kobe is probably one of the guys that, everybody knows it, he's got that y arrogance to him, everything has to surround around him the whole time. Otherwise, he doesn't function. That's the biggest example.
"If you're playing with Shaquille [O'Neal], a Hall of Famer, you keep your mouth shut and play if you want more rings," Bogut continued.
lmemulatedao!!!
LOL the 80s Lakers were not hated? Ask any 30 plus NBA fan Jazz, Sixers, Sonics, Pistons, Blazers, Warriors, Suns all hated us. 90s it died some cuz we sucked, true but plenty of teams and their fanbases enjoyed kicking us while down. Kobe is hated no doubt and is his arrogance a big part of it, but if he played for the Clips his hate would be much less ... being on the Lakers and being y is much worse. LOL some of u guys no about the 80s so please stop posting ignorance ...

The Los Angeles Daily News (Elliott Teaford) reports: For what it’s worth, the “Beat L.A.” chant started in Boston Garden near the end of the Philadelphia 76ers’ victory over the Celtics in the 1982 Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics crowd urged the Sixers to beat the Lakers in the Finals. Philadelphia would lose to the Lakers in six games, but that didn’t stop the chant from spreading around the nation like a plague without a cure.Read more: http://www.insidehoops.com/blog/?p=1249#ixzz2OeL22KIc
Learn your history, sons ...
Oh and not disputing ...Mid's claim it was used in baseball prior. But the use and popularity of it in the NBA (far more common) was Boston urging the Sixers to take us out. I dont care what yall say that is hate and respect rolled in to one. When when of your fiercest divison rivals urges you to beat your inter-conference rival that is real RESPECT. Oh and Kobe had nothing to do with that team ... yet that chant was heard in Utah, Denver detroit, seattle and Portland soon after ...know your history, sons. Lakers will be hated long after Kobe is gone it is passed down sure it simmers down some when we suck ...but it's always there. Most of NBA fans in the 80's either sided with the celts or LAkers once their own team was beaten there has been NOTHING like that since ...
lol that chant really gets to you doesn't it?
Gets to me? I like it. Every time I hear it, it makes me smile ... reminds me of why being a Laker fan is special. Yankees suck is the only thing close to it in US major sports ... oh and as one Spur fan pointed out .. the red wings have one as well especilly when they were winning with Federov and company ... .
You're the one going out of your way to prove the chant is nothing but a sign of "Respect" and jealousy, like it doesn't mean any more than that. I sense a bit of insecurity there, yet you're playing into why the chant still exists today. But I'm sure alot of people are jealous of the franchise with Jim Buss and Mike D'antoni in it.
Not after 9 June 1985.
tee, hee.
Killa has a point. Everyone likes to see the big dog lose and the Lakers are a big dog franchise. However, there is more vitriol involved with the Kobe era Lakers. The Magic era Lakers had more respect. Those guys were genuinely likeable. Kobe, on the other hand, is more polarizing. He is hated as much as he is respected. His teammates don't even like him because they have to share that hatred.
How do you know his teammates hate him tho? Care to share any links that could back up your claim?
Sure, once Magic ran Westhead & Nixon off.
tee, hee.
Google it, Sparky. There's plenty of info out there. I'm not your daddy.
Well, 's bell's, if it's written on the Internet, it's gotta be true.
tee, hee.
He asked for links. Do you think he meant sausage?
Will do since I'm drinking coffee, but the only ex-teammate I remember ever say anything bad about Kobe was Smush, but I'll look into it, don't you worry about it.
I'm sure these guys don't like Kobe....Shaq doesn't count since Kobe hunted him down with fangs and poison...
Kobe Bryant says he has nothing to learn from his Team USA teammatesAccording to USA TODAY Sports, Bryant says he is in a place in his career that everyone else on the team wants to get to. He also says there is no player on the Team USA roster that can teach him anything.
“I’m where everybody wants to get to,” Kobe said when asked what it’s like to be the old guy on the team. “I just happen to be still playing.”
He was then asked if he can learn anything form the younger players on the team.
“No,” he replied. ”I don’t know if I know it all, but I know more than they do.”
