Meh. It will only happen once. Teams are never going to rest players now, they will all be 'injured'.
Anytime Kawhi or Timmy needs a rest it will be a knee problem, Manu maybe a back problem and Tony maybe an ankle problem.
"I have no problem with the NBA turning a blind eye to the Heat for resting its stars against the Spurs; the problem
I have is if the league doesn't rescind the Spurs' $250,000 fine meted for resting their stars at the end of November. It was a knee-jerk reaction at the time and a silly one; the league has absolutely no business telling its teams who they have to play and when. I understand how powerful the league's broadcast partners are and I appreciate that teams can't be granted perfect autonomy. That said, the inherent contradiction presented in not reprimanding the Heat is only one of many sure to crop up, if not this season than certainly in future ones. And as much as the business of sport is taking priority over the actual spirit of compe ion, the line has to be drawn some place. In this case, it was the wrong place. I know that the league frequently (and quietly) refunds player fines that are appealed; it would be wise not only to do the same with the Spurs but acknowledge that it overreached. There are enough lawyers that work for the NBA for someone to recognize a bad precedent when they see one."

I'm kind of hoping that the Spurs announce more and more ridiculous diseases to get away from the fines.

Not to defend our small market team.......tbh
Stern will never admit making mistake torwards Spurs
Everyone already talked about this back then. Stern is retiring he dont give a
It is common knowledge that the Spurs could not just sit the players but had to list injuries if they didn't want a fine. It was a slap in Stern's face by Pop and the Spurs should have ben fined.
You're a pussy boy, tbh..
Pop's screwup was NOT TELLING THE NBA, violating the NBA rules, which Spurs must have known about.
I bet MIA told the NBA their players would be out.
The $250K fine has changed nothing. Pop is still sitting players when he wants to rest them, except they have now some kind of injuries.
I will be curious to see if this story will have consequences on next season schedule. Will the NBA still have nationally televised games that are the 4th games in 5 days for one of the team? Even when teams are playing at full strength, these games are often not interesting because one of the team is tired and so sucks.
And the true issue is the 82 games regular season. When you see all the injuries players are having this season, it's hard not to incriminate this crazy schedule. Pop solution of not overplaying his players is the less worst solution but few coaches can do it because a lot of teams are fighting for a roster spot and/or coaches can't tank game with the risk of losing their job.
Especially this season, which seems more injury-riddled than usual..
Spurs: Parker and Ginobili missed a substantial time period
Hawks: Lou Williams torn acl
Celtics: Rondo torn acl
Bulls: Rose torn acl, Noah with PF
Mavs: Dirk missed a quarter of the year
Nuggets: Gallo torn acl, Lawson with PF
Pacers: Granger out for season
Lakers: A bunch of injuries
A lot of major injuries to playoff teams..
The San Antonio-Miami situation does nothing but further fuel conspiracy theorists that believe the league is rigged. I understand the differences between what the two teams did, but that is merely a matter of semantics. They did the same thing. To the casual observer it is going to appear that the league did not fine the superstar laden Heat for doing the same thing San Antonio did. The NBA only gets away with this nonsense because it is so far behind football on the American sports scene.
The real issue is the long season though. The Spurs had two games this year against the top two teams in the league that ended up being the fourth game in five nights, on national television, with said opponents getting 4+ days of rest. The odds of that being a coincidence are so astronomically low that you might as well say they are 0. Basketball has the potential to be the most popular sport in the world, but it will never come close to sniffing that potential as long as its biggest league is viewed as crooked by many.
This. All they did was encourage coaches to lie and not write in "rest" anymore.
Does anyone remember the broadcast of Spurs/Heat? "A few Heat players are out with various injuries", yet they played like 40 mins the game before and 40 mins the next game. What injuries? It was just rest.
Maybe that's the first thing the next commish will do? Nah
all I know is those tickets were expensive as ! and when I was lookin at em it hadn't been announced yet that bron and wade were sitting! buncha bull !
Spurs have had three times this season in which they had 4 games in 5 nights. The 4th game (second back to back) has been: @ Denver, Miami, and now @ Oklahoma City. As mentioned, two of those, Miami and OKC, had four freaking days off waiting for the Spurs game.
I hate excuses, but that scheduling quirk sure seems like BS to me. Oklahoma City, a much younger team, has only had the '4 in 5 nights' schedule one time, and the 4th game was against Detroit.
Health is the key, but no doubt Pop has already circled many games on the schedule before the season that pretty much had "loss" penciled in. He half-ass "surrenders" around 5-8 games a year. The winning percentage is pretty amazing considering this, and how few players on the team average over 30 minutes...
The last time we were playing OKC I believe it was like their 4th in 5 nights and like 7th in 12 nights.
Check the schedule before you post. OK City had 4 games in 5 days with the last game a back to back in San Antonio in March!
Yeah, I missed that one. I still think it is a scheduling discrepancy when you have a nationally televised game when one team has been off for 4 days or more and the other is playing 4 games in 5 nights...
Lol, this.
