It's unfortunate that this happened, and if an eight year old child was killed as a result of this... that is truly sad. But what else is sad, in a completely different way, is how nearly 90% of the people I know on Facebook spammed this news and their corresponding social commentary on it all day long. Tomorrow half of them will be back to their regular routine of posting stuff on Facebook that only matters to them. By the end of the week, all of them will be back to normal. It's only because this took place in the United States at a public, televised event that this is getting any buzz. People die every day. People kill other people every day. Been happening since Day 1 of humanity (long ing time no matter what side of the evolution debate you fall on).

Just because you live in an affluent area of a developed country doesn't mean you have a cons utional right to live until you're 95. If a bomb goes off in Austin tomorrow, killing/injuring myself and others... I'd just be one of several faces plastered across your TV set on the news. Won't make me any less dead or injured. Won't make the world any less prone to killing and injuring human beings.
    Agreed.

So what do you suggest, everyone keep moving on and just act like nothing happened at all ?
Whottt he's saying is that people are gonna keep moving on regardless. The people posting this on facebook are just attention whoring and will do absolutely nothing to help the victims.

I agree with all of that. I wish more people actually volunteered in their local community rather than just say something on Facebook. That said, a lot of local people DID help out yesterday. Red Cross got a ton of donations online, and the local blood banks were full with people donating.

I think it's easier to lament loss in dynamic situations like this, than it is to lament loss of say, vehicular accidents. Once deaths get to a certain number, people just think of them as statistics.
I'm actually going to Haiti this summer to do some charity work with a group from my church that a few of my church buds talked me into. It sounds like a great experience and I don't have anything going on, so why not donate my time to a better cause? The way people use social media to think they're making an impact on real causes, like changing their profile pic to the damn equals sign, or "liking" the "Help Victims of [insert tragedy here]" page is actually doing something when a donation would at least be the lowest possible effort you could put into it. You're right on the money, dude. If you believe in what you're saying and want to open your mouth and talk about it, go do something about it first. It takes like, six letters from cons uents to get your congressman to do something. Six.

I love America, but my own people piss me off half the time.

Interesting. It looks like either it was an accident, or the explosives were designed to maim and not kill. Most the ball bearings apparently came out at leg level. Lots of legs amputated or blown off.
No way it was an accident. Not with 2 coordinated blasts. My wild ass guess is that it was home-grown terrorism given that it was on Tax day and in Boston where it is Patriot Day I believe. This would be consistent with how an anti-government group operates I believe.

This is also the same week as the Waco Siege and OKC Bombing anniversary. It's still too early to jump to conclusions but if I had to bet on it I'd say domestic terrorism.

In the context of the statement it meant "badly designed" as in the bombs were intended to kill and not maim like they did.

In any case you have an interesting take that makes sense...

It's silly to think that Facebook updates and community service/donations are mutually exclusive. I know plenty of Facebook spammers who are active active volunteers and donors, and being part of social media campaigns is something they enjoy doing.

Don't be the guy who volunteers for the first time in his life and then goes around telling everybody else they don't enough for the community. That's annoying for the people who didn't just recently get "talked into it."

There is a gigantic difference between participating in a social media campaign and deciding to only give a about things when the skid marks of humanity come out to play and do evil things like blow up the Boston Marathon. Just like you know people who do try to make a difference whilst spamming Facebook all day, I know plenty of people who last provided rich social commentary following the Newtown shooting. That wasn't the last time tragedy struck, even in the United States, whose citizens are apparently the only ones worth feeling sorry for.

And think what you want about me. I do a decent amount of local charity, mostly with trying to help teenagers not try drugs because of the negative impact drugs had on my life and future. And spending $1,700 out of my own pocket for travel, lodging and food for the Haiti trip is what I had to get talked into. I'm only 26, I don't have an extremely high paying job and that kind of money is a sacrifice. Contrary to what you may believe volunteers don't get a free ride all the time. I just don't feel like I'm above ing about a price tag on something like that.

I suggest that people stop letting like this show up on their radar only when it happens in the United States. Or only when it happens in a cowardly way such as a remote explosive detonation or a school shooting. People die everyday in this country and every other country in this world. How many other stories of people being killed made the news yesterday? How are the deaths and injuries of the Boston Marathon victims worth any more than the deaths and injuries that shallow, low-life, bag human beings caused to innocent human beings yesterday? Did Tragedy just take a day off everywhere else yesterday because it saw the Boston Marathon news on TV? Bet your weight in gold it didn't.
Brah the fact that death is an everyday thing doesnt make what happened yesterday any less ed up. Im sure the fact that most evil acts are usually done in the darkness while this was intentionally done out in the open has alot to do with why this makes people shiver more than the average crime. Evil rearing its head into an international, family event makes me more uncomfortable than Jamal doing a drive-by on Tyrone tbh.

Dont see how not donating time/money to help this cause makes people attention s either. I likely wont do either of those but that doesnt mean I dont feel for the people that were affected by this. The day people dont acknowledge stuff like this, whether it be for just a day or a week, and continue going on as if nothing happened is the day this world will have gone to complete tbh.

Not sure where my post went. SC cut and pasted my response to the same question earlier. Not saying the bombs were an accident. Just that unless the bombs were badly designed it looks like the intent was to maim as many people as possible and not necessarily kill them.

And you're using the Boston Marathon bombing to provide rich social commentary on Spurstalk (aka social media). You're painting with such a broad brush about people but really you're just complaining about the people you've chosen to surround yourself with—your own social network.

I will think what I want about you, just like you'll think what you want about the people on Facebook during conversations around events like this. For me, I'm annoyed when people promote their volunteer work while complaining about the lack of community involvement they PERCEIVE in everybody else's lives. And yes, giving money is often part of volunteer work depending on the kind of engagement and commitment. Any experienced volunteer knows that and has opened up their wallet in addition to providing service to support what they believe. It's great that you're doing that too, but act like you been there.

The Boston Marathon and U.S. Drone Attacks: a Tale of Two Terrorisms

To murder several runners using bombs at a sporting event is terrorism.

To murder 175 children using military drones is U.S. policy.

We should accept neither. We should fight against both.

You do realize that even if 99% of Islam is peaceful, that 1% comprises 15,000,000 people, right?
All anyone has to do is look at the history of those middle eastern countries, tribal wars, beheadings as a spectator sport, honor killings, mistreatment of women, a load of people who are so totally ed they really do buy into...this life is nothing so blow somebody up along with yourself and...boom paradise~~~ Ever notice we never see an Olympics or any kind of world gathering in that region of the world, why is that, yep, it's ed.

I get a kick out of..."it's just the fundamentalists"...well no . Which tells us what the fundamentals of Islam are, yep. death to those dreaded infidels.

Far more than 1% are looking to kill somebody.
