Obviously, everyone knows that last year's trade with the Warriors enabled the Spurs to jettison the final 2 years of RJ's ridiculous contract ($10 mil this season & $11 mil next season). It also put the Spurs in the position to free up $10 mil off the books this summer, with Jack's deal expiring. Economics aside and with the benefit of hindsight and all that has transpired since (RJ's low production, Jack's low production and eventual meltdown, injuries to key players and now the T-Mac signing), does anyone believe the Spurs would've been better off simply keeping RJ, even in a diminished role capacity, along with that precious 1st round pick in the 2012 draft, rather than making the trade with the Warriors?

Guys, this is just a question not to advocate a redo.

No. RJ wouldn't have hit 6 3's in game 6.

Still a great trade. Unloading RJ was worth losing a 1st round pick.

Getting rid of that awful contract was one of the great moves the FO has ever pulled off.

lll no. RJ just seemed to bring the entire team down with his lazy ass play on both ends. He didnt deserve to play with the likes of Tim, Tony, and Manu tbh. That, and Kawhi wouldnt be where he is right now if RJ were still here...

So am I. There's no question the trade had to be made. I do hate the Spurs missed the chance to nab Ezeli. The Spurs certainly could've used a young player with his skills. In the new economic climate, 1st round picks do become precious.

+10M is too much for what RJ produces at this point. Kawhi is much better and the Spurs can get a decent SF backup for around the vet minimum. Unloading RJ's contract could make it possible to keep Splitter.

The Spurs would have probably wasted the pick on another undersized guard or a Euro prospect. When's the last time the Spurs drafted a shot blocking big with size?

There will probably end up being some good second-round player that will make Spurs fans complain about giving up the pick instead of just amnestying Jefferson, but I still think it was a good move. Had the Spurs kept the pick and drafted Ezeli, they would not have picked up Baynes, and I think Aron is better than Festus, which should render any complaints about not having the pick last year moot.

Ezeli is worth an extra 10M, keeping the corpse of RJ around, and possibly losing the ability to resign Splitter. Of having much cap flexibility this offseason? Yeah. No.

Broken down 2013 Capspace + No RJ >>>> Ezeli.

    NO........ NO! That is all.
jefferson = jackson. neither provided much of anything
One hit some threes and played some D in last years playoffs, that alone >>>>>>>>>> Jefferson, plus the contract is off the books now next year whereas RJ would have still be here making 11 million. I still have no clue why the Spurs resigned RJ and for that much after his horrible first year here.
