So there has been much talk about Kobe being the leader, and as a leader, you are expected to lead by example, and according to Kobe fans, will your team to wins under difficult situations.

What is more difficult than an elimination game in the playoffs? So let’s look at how Kobe shot in elimination games since 2005.
    2005:
    No games, didn’t make playoffs.

    2006:
Game 7 vs. PHO. 8 for 16 FG, including 4 for 8 on 3s and 4 for 5 on FTs for 24 points. People may not know, but this is only one of the two games Kobe shot 50% or more from the field in elimination games since the departure of Shaq. Looks like a great line, only that Kobe refused to shoot after half time for reasons only he would know. Lakers lost, BIG.

    2007:
Game 5 vs. PHO. 13 for 33 FG, 2 for 8 3P, 6 for 7 FT for 34 points. Hey, people may have forgotten, but before Pau was the complimentary player, Lamar Odom was the official whipping boy of Laker fans. The Lakers ALWAYS lose because of Lamar, but then again, in this game, Lamar actually shot 13 for 21 on FGA for 33 points. He may have been able to help some more if he saw the ball a little more, but hey, it’s an elimination game, and we KNOW Kobe has to shoot at least a third of the FG, so there you go. Lakers lost.
    2008:
Game 6 vs. BOS. 7 for 22 FGA, including 3 for 9 on 3s and 5 for 5 on FTs for 22 points. His complimentary players didn’t step up in this game. In fact, they didn’t even see the ball much as nobody else shot the ball more than 8 times with Kobe getting more than 1/3 of all FGAs. Lakers lost.

    2009:
Game 7 vs. HOU. 4 for 12 FGA, including 1-4 on 3s and 5-6 on FTs for 14 points. Whew, are we glad that “complimentary player” Pau Gasol got 10 for 19 for 21 points with 18 rebounds. What a complimentary player! Outdoing the leader yet again. Lakers win.

    2010:
Game 7 vs. BOS. Doesn’t’ get any clutcher than this. 6 for 24 from the field, 0 for 6 from 3, and 11 for 15 from the FT line. Wow, really? 15 FTA for a perimeter player? Oh, right, 37 FTA for the lakers in total compared to 17 for the Celtics when the two teams were relatively even for the previous 6 games. Top it off, a huge amount of those 37 FTA came in the 4th quarter. Funny as . Anyways, back to topic. 23 high inefficient points. Luckily, complimentary player Pau Gasol shot 6 for 15, for 19 points to go along with 18 rebounds, and MWP shot 7 for 18. Lakers win.

    2011:
Game 4 vs. Mavs: 7 for 18, 0 for5 on 3s and 3 for 4 from FT line, for 17 points. Everybody sucked on the Lakers that day, and they were promptly eliminated, swept in fact, by the eventual champions.

    2012:
Game 7 vs. Nuggets, 7 for 16 FGA, and 1 for 4 on FTs for 17 points. Smashing! In the same game “complimentary player Pau Gasol shot 9 for 19 for 23 points, and added another 17 rebounds. Lakers win

Game 5 vs. OKC. 18 for 33 FGA, including 1 for 6 on 3s and 5-7 on FTAs for an amazing 42 points. Can’t blame him on this game. Too bad, all of that effort couldn’t get the Lakers past the 2nd round, as the rest of the team only shot 42 FG in total.

    2013:
    No elimination games, Kobe injured.

So there you have it folks. Great leader, leading by example in the toughest of the tough games. Kudos.

Kobe wasn't the leader in 04, he tried to be and shot the Lakers out of the finals, but he still wasn't the leader.

You care too much. During the NBA playoffs when Kobe is ass back on a hospital bed trying to poke some white trash teenage candystriper, this thread is about as relevant as Russell Westbrook's fashion sense or Derrick Rose's academic resume. Kobe has sucked in big games. He's a selfish chucker with a horrible shooting percentage in those games. I think Kobe's own kids know that. So what's the point right now? He's not playing. He's not newsworthy. Kobe should be ignored like a Kool offer to wager a bet. But for some reason, he's still on people's minds, Kobe fanbois and Kobe haters alike.

For these playoffs, Kobe. He's not a part of it. Let him wallow in his own self pity and his own mamba ego. Stop talking about him and stop paying attention to his stupid ing tweets. He's no more relevant to NBA conversation right now than my Detroit Pistons.

But Jammie, as students of the game, we have to look at interesting personalities, even when these are fringe top 20 players. Kobe's time is coming to an end, and as a fan of basketball, I am privileged to have watched such a skilled scorer. I want to put some perspective, and give where credit is due. He is probably one of the most difficult player to rank all-time, just as it was for player like John Havlicek. Fantastic longevity on very stacked team throughout their respective careers have warped their legacy.

You shouldn't give a about Kobe right now. No one should. You started this thread to irk Kobe fanbois. But it's really pointless, especially during the playoffs while Kobe is an invalid spectator nobody should give any attention to.

Why not? I am still giving attention to Magic, Shaq, Barkley, Miller, and Kenny Smith. Hey, I see them (or their tweets) on TV, they are all still in the spotlight.

I want to do an analysis on the other players, but none of them have such a consistent crappiness of elimination games.

Jamstone is right. Your timing is just wrong. 16 teams are competing in the playoffs and you create this thread over someone who's not relevant. Its just someone dying for attention. I mean if that's your thing, cool. I personally thought it was weak. You should learn from Mid. Dude always knows when to take a on Kobe and his legions always bites

Well given that the Lakers are facing the Spurs right now, and the talks of Pau being a weak leader popped up, it is only natural to see how Kobe performed as a leader when he was healthy.

    Turned out, not very well.

great analysis as usual. what's funny about this elimination game was I wasn't even shocked by the Laker FT advantage. I knew it was coming. I knew there was no way the league would let MJ 2.0 lose that one, too much marketing at stake.

sure old fart Dale will parrot his usual line, but The Contradiction shows he knows whats up. He needs Stern for that peace of mind.

Kobe's legacy will be a triumph of marketing and media, of style over substance. least with Lebron we have someone who lives up to the hype. and is actually relevant right now, not tweeting to steal attention away from the team.

Notice how only Kobe sympathizers are critical of this thread, calling it "irrelevant" or "bad timing."

...which is merely side-stepping the point. Kobe is overrated as a clutch performer. It might go against your biased intuition, and it might not be breaking news, but it's the truth.

It is relevant. How many Laker fans have been saying "We would win this series with Kobe"? If nothing else, this thread is directed at that group.

    Since 2005:

    Kobe - 2
    TD - 1
Actually, if you look at the original post, we were beginning with the 2004-05 season. Duncan won the championship that year. Therefore, the count since 2005 is 2 apiece.
