Looks like Joey Crawford didn't make the cut for this years playoffs. So much for that.

I'm still not sure I'd read too much into that, but the assignment of officials in these playoffs has been very different from past years.

As I noted yesterday in Fabbs' Lakers/referee conspiracy thread, so far, the officials have actually worked in crews that stay intact over a couple of games (or more). Over the weekend, there were 8 crews that worked games:

MIA/MIL (Crew 1): Bennett Salvatore, James Capers, Sean Corbin
NYK/BOS (Crew 2):Monty McCutchen, Bill Spooner, Gary Zielinski
IND/ATL (Crew 3): Derrick Stafford, David Jones, Rodney Mott
BRK/CHI (Crew 4): Ken Mauer, Ed Malloy, Sean Wright
OKC/HOU (Crew 5): Ron Garretson, Tony Brothers, Zach Zarba
SAS/LAL (Crew 6): Danny Crawford, Marc Davis, Jason Phillips
DEN/GST (Crew 7): Mike Callahan, David Guthrie, Tom Washington
LAC/MEM (Crew 8): Scott Foster, John Goble, Bill Kennedy

In the Game 2's over the last 3 days, 7 of those crews have worked together again once and the crew for tonight's Spurs/Lakers Game 2 will work it's 3rd game together:

MIA/MIL: Garretson, Brothers, Zarba (Crew 5)
NYK/BOS: Stafford, Jones, Mott (Crew 3)
IND/ATL: Mauer, Malloy, Wright (Crew 4)
BRK/CHI: McCutchen, Spooner, Zielinski (Crew 2)
    OKC/HOU: D. Crawford, Davis, Phillips (Crew 6)
SA/LAL: Callahan, Guthrie, Washington (Crew 7)
DEN/GST: Foster, Goble, Kennedy (Crew 8)
LAC/MEM: Callahan, Guthrie, Washington (Crew 7)

I have researched this going back as far as 1985, and can't find an instance in which the league has stayed this true to the crew concept on a consistent basis. It's very much like the way baseball maintains a crew concept (though, obviously, in baseball, the crew just stays with the series). But it's very much unlike the way the NBA has typically assigned officials.

Usually, by the end of the Round 1 Game 2's, we've seen pretty much all of the officials we're going to see during the playoffs. Last year, for example, there were 36 officials who worked in the playoffs; 34 of them worked in either Game 1 or Game 2 of the first round and the lone exceptions each worked only 1 game in the entirety of the playoffs (Violet Palmer worked Game 4 of the Indiana/Orlando series; Eddie F. Rush worked Game 3 of the New York/Miami series).

Also, the number of officials who've traditionally worked the first round has generally hovered around that 36 number:

    2012 -- 36
    2011 -- 34
    2010 -- 33
    2009 -- 35
    2008 -- 35
    2007 -- 35

This year, we've seen 24 officials work through the Game 2's, meaning that we're 12 officials short of the numbers that historically have been used. I don't know that there are actually 10-12 officials who are good enough to be trusted with playoff games beyond this point (usually, the league gives playoff games to younger, inexperienced officials within the Games 1 and 2 and has them out of the picture by the end of the second weekend of the playoffs at the latest). But there are a few who are con uously absent so far, including Joey, Leon Wood, and Michael Smith.

We'll see if the crew thing continues into the Game 3s and 4s. My guess at this point is that there's probably change coming, and I'd guess that part of that change will be Joey coming back into the mix. But it's fascinating that we're 5 days and 16 games into these playoffs and haven't seen him call any games.

I'd much rather have Joey call a playoff road game than a playoff home game, tbh.

    Excellent analysis FWD...

It's not like the league to change the methodology of ref assignments without so much as a press release from league executives....

Sort of true in playoff games, too.

Since 2007, all home teams in all playoff series are 350-160 (.686)

Home teams are 41-24 in Callahan's 65 playoff games (.631) during that span. Home teams are 7-1 in David Guthrie's 8 prior games (.875) and are 38-21 in Tom Washington's 59 games (.644).

So, generally, tonight's crew would seem to give the road team an above-average chance.

Joey has Game 3 tonight in Chicago.

And the crews have changed with the start of Game 3s.
I went back and looked at this again, and the crew changes for tonight are actually relatively minor; in each game tonight at least two of the officials have worked together in earlier games in this round:

MIA/MIL -- Foster, Kennedy, Scott Wall (Foster and Kennedy working their third game together; Wall subs uting for John Goble)
BRK/CHI -- J. Crawford, Capers, Corbin (Capers and Corbin working their second game together; J. Crawford subs uting for Salvatore)
LAC/MEM -- Garretson, Brothers, Eric Lewis (Garretson and Brothers working their third game together; Lewis subs uting for Zarba)

Still not sure how long this curious consistency lasts; remarkably, having gone to this concept through 16 first round games, the league has enjoyed a first playoff week that has been devoid of any significant officiating controversy.
