Without campaigning for the Spurs to do this, I'll simply note that San Antonio could trim an additional 3m off its payroll this summer by using the stretch provision on Boris Diaw. He's a productive player on a reasonable contract so the basketball logic is hard to see, but if San Antonio is looking for ways to create cap space this is one tactic they could employ.

    How does this work?
The player salary gets split over the length of the contract x2 +1. Diaws 4.5m/1yr would become 1.5m/yr over the next 3 years.

I like Diaw, except for how painfully passive he is in shooting. If we need to squeeze out a few extra million for free agents, I hope options like waiving Bonner and going for a draft and stash come first.

Again it all depends on Manu ad Tiagos contract demands, but if the extra $3m means we could bring in someone like David West I'd be all for it. Timmy/Tiago/West is a strong front court, but I'd begin to worry about depth assuming we would be getting rid of Blair and Bonner too.

Alternatively, could this extra 3m (and cheap contracts for Manu and Tiago) push us in to Josh Smith contention?
