Both guys resigned or were fired during the travel-gate ref scandal in the 90s. They got their jobs back only because of Stern. They're the bag men, the fixers, when he needs a game to go a certain way to extend a series. Bavetta was in that group, too. I think they are the only ones left. That alone may be the reason Stern is stepping down next February.

They've gotten smarter over the years. They used to do it with FTs for the team they wanted to win, but that was painfully obvious in the box score. Now, the favored team is allowed to do damn near anything on defense, and there is no call, and no trace in the box score.
