Dr J. Showing the Spurs Love

I was a sop re at Boston U in 1969 and would go to the gym to play pickup. In the shower some of the varsity guys were talking about their upcoming game with UMass and this kid who had huge hands and could jump like crazy. So I came out to see the game. I had just arrived and was standing on the right side of baseline looking for my friends. Erving came out to the top of the key to get the ball and drove left towards me. BU ran two guys at him as he elevated 5 feet in front of me. I looked up at him hanging in the air and falling out of bounds as the BU guys started coming down. He suddenly twisted 270 degrees, ball in his hand like a grapefruit, and threw a left handed bullet to his teammate under the basket. I was frozen like, what just happened. That's my Dr. J story.

Without question the nastiest playoff series in San Antonio history was the 1976 ABA Semifinals against Dr. J's Nets. A bunch of players on the Spurs and Nets had been traded for each other at the beginning of the year, and there was a huge on-court fight in Game 4 (no suspensions, though).

Tim Duncan was born the day after that series ended.

I was at that game. Rich Jones, one of the players that we traded to the Nets, and threw several wicked punches that landed. I'm not talking weak ass half slaps that NBA players are famous for attempting, but some viscious street fighting . Of course there were no suspensions, that was the ABA!

Honestly, I'd day docs wrap around the basket, is the all-time best highlight play in the nba. It's not even a dunk either. That's no knock on any of the other plays/players..just my opinion.

The best part was, that the Nets actually left Jones (their starting forward along with Erving) in the hotel room for Game 6 because they knew there was going to be a riot if he showed his face. Good thing David Stern wasn't commissioner.
