What do you expect to do when the finals are over? You are not planning ahead well, my friend. Save this for the off-season.
Based on this and the proceeding series.
Tiago Splitter is a commodity that just keeps on giving for the spurs, he hasn't actually been bad, he has just been unimpressive except in other people's highlight reels. While the stats oriented teams will be interested in him for the right price he has considerably hurt his free market value which can only help the spurs chances of keeping him. The guy really hurt himself in his negotiating power here but will probably still be looking at a contract around 8 million per year... Resigns with spurs for around 8.3 million per year stays soft, gets a mid range jumpshot that he falls in love with that isn't all that effective.
Gary Neal with his outburst in the finals is likely to get a bit of a pay-day which is good for him, his is likely Gary's one big contract, and his agent should play hardball. I see him likely being offered at least 3.5 mill per year and possibly up to 5 depending on teams and the market. The spurs team is paying Danny Green about 3.75 million per year on average, I'd offer Neal right at 3.5 per year for 2 years with a 3rd year team option, and let things fall where they fall. Gary has loyalty to the spurs for giving him his entry shot to the nba, but also knows the fickleness of pro athletics and how fleeting things can be. He is also semi-redundant with the spurs having Joseph, Mills, and DeColo on the roster.
Does not resign goes to an eastern conference team for 4.5 mill and is hated by the fans for his lack of defense and inconsistent production.
Manu Ginobili with his struggling play in the play-offs and lack of any real need for free agency, retires if the spurs win the finals, if not he resigns with the spurs on a 2 year 3 million per year deal with a player option after the first year. Retires, becomes an analyst for NBA TV espanol, gets bored and wants to compete after a year signs a moderate comeback contract with a young team (probably pheonix or the clippers) looks good for a few weeks then flames out as he breaks himself forgetting that he is old.
Tracy McGrady retires not wanting to keep killing his stats and hoping that the HoF voters forget his ring was as a victory cigar with another team when he was fresh off a year in the Chinese league, also hopes each night while sitting on his couch smoking and getting heavier that the Chinese league improves so that his championship there looks like a legitimate international accomplishment.
DeJuan Blair his finals appearance thus far will aid in him getting a moderate contract somewhere during which he will always be injured with lingering knee pain though will put up decent numbers on occasion for the next 2 years on his 3 year deal with player option. Will find himself in dire financial straights by 2020.
What do you expect to do when the finals are over? You are not planning ahead well, my friend. Save this for the off-season.
In the off season I have computer gaming and football, most teams free agencies just bother me so I don't really pay attention during the off season, just look at acquisitions during camp.
Maybe I'll be dead wrong about this since it never happens, but somehow I suspect that the Spurs might actually draw a couple of decent free agents in the offseason if the win the le this year.
No not stars, but borderline high quality pieces. Ron Artest has already been on the Spurs' nuts for a couple of weeks. Wouldn't be surprised if more want to join after seeing how brightly the Spurs "role players" shine this year.
After all, is that any worse than playing with glory-hogging Kobe, ball-hogging Melo, not-enough-basketballs-for-just-two-players OKC, or the overshadowing and declining Miami's big 3?
Choo choo train is leaving town hopefully.3.5m
You should be their pitch-man. All good points.
Manu is costing us 14 mill right?
Realistically we could bring in a Superstar if we wanted to correct?
Manu isn't leaving. I could see Splitter gone, decent bigs get paid in this league. Spurs might look at offering bigger dollars over a short contract length, don't think you can get a better replacement for the last two seasons of Duncan's career.
Too early, but Neal could be Jaren Jackson II. Then again, another night like last night tomorrow and you'd be remiss to not reward him with a decent contract. Then again, the Spurs let Jack walk after his '03 championship run heroics. Good shooting on the relative cheap end of the scale isn't bad.
Wouldn't mind having McGrady back for a full season at the LLE. Definitely has the skills to fit in the Spurs offense and he could give you some regular season minutes and points at the 1-3 spots to help keep TP and Manu's minutes down during the regular season.
The people who simply look at Splitter's stats fail to appreciate his impact defensively.
Kyle Korver would be on the Spurs' list. David West is available.
Kobe gets amenstied by the Fakers, signs with Spurs for league minimum
Howard decides he wants to play with Kobe, comes to Spurs for $10m per year
Pop quits in disgust
David Robinson takes over head coaching job. Comes out of retirement and does the player-coach thing for a year
Robert Horry takes assistant coaching job, also plays last 5 minutes of each game
Spurs repeat as champions
Karl Malone isn't happy
/thread
JJ Re is a FA, would be an upgrade from Neal, but also probably wanting $8 million+.
Hey. You intercepted my post. Are you on an iPad?
Nice post OP.
Totally agree. I wish he was a better rebounder, but his toughness at the defensive end has been crucial this year, and his pnr with Manu is a guaranteed 6-8pts a game as long as they actually call the play (not used enough in past 3 months IMHO).
Splitter will re-sign. He knows he's soft and San Antonio will take care of him. Other teams are wary of his softness and know that their fans wouldn't be too happy about having Splitter as their franchise center. His value is overrated IMO. I have absolutely no doubt he's going to be a Spur for years to come. Unless of course MJ goes insane and offers him 12 million a year...
Gary Neal is gone. I love him though, and I think he'll be the leading scorer on a ty team and help them make the playoffs. But he's getting at least 5 million a year, and the Spurs simply aren't going to pay a role player that kind of money. Neal has never deserved the hate Spurs fans give him. He's a professional, through and through, and may be the reason why the Spurs win their fifth ring.
Manu Ginobili is going to be a Spur for as long as he wants. And no, he's not going to make less than 5 million because that's just insulting and the Spurs won't do that to him.
Dejuan Blair is gone. He wants to leave because he thinks he can get into a better situation financially. He can't but he's going to try and he has too much pride to come back to the Spurs and admit he was wrong when it's all over. Besides, the Spurs don't really want him anyways, so it's very easy to see Dejuan on another team or simply not playing in the NBA next year.
Also think we might trade De Colo.
And TMAC is most likely gone.
Thanks man. :P
I wish it worked that way, but no sadly. We're already a bit over the cap so we wouldn't have 14m to sign just anyone. Luckily, Stephen Jackson's salary also comes off the books at the same time, so that's 24 mil freed up.This puts the Spurs' team salary at around 45m. Salary cap next year is projected to be at 58.5 million, so we'll have 13.5 million to play with.
I think Manu's salary still counts against the cap until he's re-signed or they part ways, so it'll be more like 0 until he inks another deal. . . then if he hopefully agrees to just something in the 6-7 mil, then we'll have another 6.5-7.5 mil or so to play with ands sign whoever. Spurs can use that to sign someone else, then they can re-sign Splitter and others to raises and we can go above the cap to do that.
Actually I just looked it up and the salary cap for the season after next is way higher by like 5-6 mil more than it is this year.
Not sure if serious but McGrady's team in China finished in last place.
